{"id":36560,"date":"2015-04-24T08:01:20","date_gmt":"2015-04-24T12:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=36560"},"modified":"2015-04-23T16:05:57","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T20:05:57","slug":"wright-state-to-hire-americorps-vista-members-to-help-low-wealth-first-year-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2015\/04\/24\/wright-state-to-hire-americorps-vista-members-to-help-low-wealth-first-year-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State to hire AmeriCorps VISTA members to help low-wealth, first-year students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/04\/AmeriCorps-Vista.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-36561\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/04\/AmeriCorps-Vista-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"AmeriCorps VISTA logo\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a>Two members of AmeriCorps VISTA will soon be doing business at Wright State University to support low-wealth, first-year students and to connect them with the resources that will help them complete their degrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes this special is that these VISTA members are going to be advocates for these students,\u201d said Marjorie McLellan, interim director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/academic-affairs\/programs\/service-learning-and-civic-engagement\" target=\"_blank\">service-learning and civic engagement<\/a> at Wright State.<\/p>\n<p>AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed to fight poverty. There are currently more than 5,000 VISTA members serving in over 1,000 projects throughout the nation, including at food banks and health clinics.<\/p>\n<p>Wright State was recently approved for funding for the two VISTA positions in the Connect2Complete program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe larger goal of AmeriCorps VISTA is to alleviate poverty,\u201d McLellan said. \u201cThis fulfills our mission in community engagement in that if we retain students and help them succeed, that goes a long way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A national search has been launched for the two members, who must have at least a bachelor\u2019s degree. They will be hired by May 22, start work July 1 and work for at least one year and up to three.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking for somebody who really cares about helping economically disadvantaged students get their degrees and go on to successful careers,\u201d said McLellan. \u201cSomebody who has got a lot of interpersonal skills would be good.
