{"id":36616,"date":"2015-04-30T10:16:18","date_gmt":"2015-04-30T14:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=36616"},"modified":"2022-09-26T10:04:15","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T14:04:15","slug":"college-of-liberal-arts-recognizes-businesses-relationships-at-internship-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2015\/04\/30\/college-of-liberal-arts-recognizes-businesses-relationships-at-internship-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"College of Liberal Arts recognizes community partners at internship celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_36617\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/04\/15504_038.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36617\" class=\"wp-image-36617 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/04\/15504_038-508x338.jpg\" alt=\"Alexandria Gray, an English major focusing on professional writing, was one the 235 students recognized at the College of Liberal Arts Internship Breakfast Celebration.\" width=\"460\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alexandria Gray, an English major focusing on professional writing, was one of the\u00a0students who participated in the College of Liberal Arts Internship Breakfast Celebration.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From the English language and literatures major to criminal justice, students in Wright State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of Liberal Arts<\/a> (COLA) participated in the college&#8217;s Internship Breakfast Celebration recognizing the successful relationship of students and business partners through internship experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 90 to 100 people attended the second annual breakfast celebration on April 22.<\/p>\n<p>The breakfast serves as a thank you to community partners, said Jennifer Buckwalter, assistant dean for community and student engagement in COLA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognize it\u2019s a lot of work to accommodate our students so we want to thank them because they didn\u2019t have to do this. It was a choice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Internships provide students with real-world opportunities to apply what they are learning in the classroom, Buckwalter said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Student have to engage and reflect and process on the skills they\u2019ve acquired, and what they\u2019ve learned about leadership, communication, networking, research and so much more,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Internships help our students get their foot in the door and often times lead to future employment opportunities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over 235 <a href=\"http:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/community#tab=internship-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COLA students participated\u00a0in internships<\/a>\u00a0from summer 2014 through spring 2015, accumulating more than\u00a056,000 hours of work.<\/p>\n<p>Students interned at 150 business partners, including ACCO Brands, Channel 2\u2019s &#8220;Living Dayton&#8221; news program, Community Services for the Deaf, Hannah\u2019s Treasure Chest, U.S. Secret Service and Disability Services at Walt Disney World. Wright State also offers many internal internships.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven students spoke about their internship experiences during an exhibition at the breakfast. Students represented various majors from international and comparative politics to English language and literatures to anthropology.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler Heneghan, an anthropology major, works at the Dayton Society of Natural History with the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. He assists in locating artifacts, including projectile points, or arrowheads, at the SunWatch Indian Village. He has found three projectile points out of the 400 that have been discovered at the site so far.<\/p>\n<p>He said internship experience helped him win a fellowship known as the &#8220;NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates.&#8221; The research fellowship enables him to work with faculty at partner institutions on an independent project.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of his time at SunWatch, Heneghan said, &#8220;There\u2019s nothing quite like it in the U.S.;\u00a0 it\u2019s one of the only places where we\u2019re investigating prehistoric architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/04\/internship-15504_089.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-36619\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/04\/internship-15504_089-508x354.jpg\" alt=\"Student Murad Abdallah talking withKristin Sobolik\" width=\"460\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Murad Abdallah, a crime and justice major, discussed his internship with the U.S. Marshal Service with College of Liberal Arts Dean Kristin Sobolik.<\/p>\n<p>Murad Abdallah, who is trilingual, is majoring in crime and justice and has much experience within the workforce. He served an internship with U.S. Marshal Service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Law enforcement] is never boring, and you\u2019re always doing something that matters, such as protecting the people I love,\u201d said Abdallah.<\/p>\n<p>Abdallah previously served in the judicial security.<\/p>\n<p>Student Alexandria Gray interns at ACCO Brands, where she writes articles for the company&#8217;s internal website.
