\"Asthma<\/a>More than 22 million people living in the United States have asthma, a chronic lifelong disease that affects the lungs, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In addition, more than 50 million Americans suffer from all types of allergies.<\/p>\n

Locally, Wright State Physicians<\/a>, a multispecialty physicians group affiliated with the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, is encouraging those suffering from asthma and allergies to see a physician in May, which is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.<\/p>\n

\u201cAsthma attacks can cause adults to miss work and children to miss school,\u201d said Donald Clark, M.D., medical director of Wright State Physicians Family Medicine. \u201cThese dangerous and sometimes life-threatening episodes can reduce the quality of life for people with asthma.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clark advised that people with asthma learn how to avoid asthma triggers, including tobacco smoke, mold, outdoor air pollution, colds and the flu.<\/p>\n

\u201cA relationship with a trusted family physician can help asthma sufferers,\u201d he said. \u201cAsthma can be controlled by avoiding triggers that cause asthma attacks and taking the right medicine at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those suffering from seasonal allergies, sneezing, coughing and itching are common during this time of the year. Clark recommends they see a physician if they haven\u2019t already done so.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will review the patient\u2019s medical history, ask questions about symptoms and possible allergens,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can then help patients design a plan to improve their quality of life and reduce their risk for developing further problems.\u201d<\/p>\n
