{"id":40677,"date":"2016-04-22T08:57:21","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T12:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=40677"},"modified":"2016-05-02T14:21:03","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T18:21:03","slug":"fall-protection-class-is-taking-wright-state-students-to-new-heights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2016\/04\/22\/fall-protection-class-is-taking-wright-state-students-to-new-heights\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall protection class is taking Wright State students to new heights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The sounds of metal clanging against steel rings out of an old cement building. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/national-center-for-medical-readiness\">Wright State&#8217;s National Center for Medical Readiness<\/a> was the backdrop for students who donned safety harnesses and tested their courage at Calamityville.<\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen students and area workers took part in a weeklong safety class. A highlight of the week was a lesson on how to safely climb a 40-foot tower.<\/p>\n<p>The tower was donated to Wright State by the IUE-CWA. Jim Clark,IUE-CWA president, envisioned students entering the workforce with basic skills to work safely and workers having an opportunity to enhance their workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives us activities on what the student will run into in the real workplace,\u201d says Jeff Whitaker, a fall prevention consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Katelyn Alcon, a senior majoring in environmental health sciences, is interested in working in emergency medicine. \u201cI think that knowing the risks, I will be able to respond better as a physician,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The program ensures that a student will receive proper training pursuant to OSHA\u2019s requirements for competent persons. Upon successful course completion, which includes passing a skills test along with a written test, students receive a fall protection certificate that is valid for two years.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Labor has declared May 2-6 National Safety Stand-Down Week to raise awareness and prevent fall hazards in the construction industry.
