(Photo by Erin Pence)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright State University is harnessing the enthusiasm created by hosting the first general election presidential debate with a project designed to educate students about the political process.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/multicultural-affairs-and-community-engagement\/community-engagement-programs\/wright-vote-project\">Wright Vote Project<\/a> will feature candidate forums, panel discussions, issues research, a film screening and a campus appearance by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe excitement surrounding the debate provides an opportunity for us to expand and amplify the important activities that we undertake each year around voter education,\u201d said project organizer Kimberly Barrett, vice president for multicultural affairs and community engagement. \u201cIt lines up well with the university\u2019s mission of transforming the communities we serve by promoting civic engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright State will host the first presidential debate, on Sept. 26. The debate is expected to be in the national and international spotlight and attract thousands of media members.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett hopes the debate will spark a renewed interest among students in civic engagement and the whole electoral process.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2016\/04\/14\/wright-vote-project-off-and-running-as-presidential-debate-looms\/lwv_us_logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40682\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-40682\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2016\/04\/LWV_US_logo-260x211.jpg\" alt=\"Wright Vote Project off and running as presidential debate looms\" width=\"260\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a>\u201cI know that we\u2019ve seen a lot of cynicism over the past few decades related to politics,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you want to change the world \u2014 at least our world and the way that it works \u2014 politics is one way to do this. Voting and being an informed voter is a key way of doing that. People talk about activism and making a difference. Here\u2019s a way to make a difference that is right in your backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/multicultural-affairs-and-community-engagement\">Division of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement<\/a> is partnering on the project with the Division of Student Affairs and the League of Women Voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to do everything we can to engage the students,\u201d said Susan Hesselgesser, executive director of the League of Women Voters of the Greater Dayton Area.<\/p>\n<p>The league will help coordinate candidate forums, participate in a program with the Women\u2019s Center on women and the vote, and support Wright State in its plans for the debate.<\/p>\n<p>Hesselgesser said the goal is to give students an eye-opening view of the democratic process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s more powerful when they meet candidates, ask questions and begin to understand the importance of choosing their representatives and the next president,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a serious decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hesselgesser said working with college students can be invigorating because they are usually not old enough to have become skeptical of the political process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to get the young people in the process because they are the next generation,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are handing it over to our kids.
