{"id":42390,"date":"2016-09-16T13:36:47","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T17:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=42390"},"modified":"2016-09-16T13:36:48","modified_gmt":"2016-09-16T17:36:48","slug":"workout-buddy-program-gives-more-opportunities-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2016\/09\/16\/workout-buddy-program-gives-more-opportunities-for-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Workout Buddy Program gives more opportunities for students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Through the Workout Buddy program at Wright State University, individuals with disabilities are introduced to and can participate in sport and exercise with the assistance of a trainer.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Huff, a junior social work major who has a mild form of mild cerebral palsy, is one of many students who benefit from the free program, which is offered by Wright State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/campus-recreation\/adapted-recreation\">Adapted Recreation Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has widened possibilities of being able to work out,\u201d said Huff, who has participated in the Workout Buddy Program since his freshman year. \u201cBecause of safety reasons, I have to have someone in the pool at all times.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42393\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2016\/09\/16\/workout-buddy-program-gives-more-opportunities-for-students\/17841-sarah-olsen-adapted-recreation-workout-buddy-8-9-16-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42393\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42393\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-42393\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2016\/09\/workout-buddy-17841_012-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jacob Huff, left, and Cameron Moon train together as part of Adapted Recreation's Workout Buddy Program. (Photo by Erin Pence)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Huff is independent while working with his upper body but needs a trainer by his side when using his legs. His trainer, Cameron Moon, a junior majoring in biological sciences, assists Huff by walking with him across the swimming pool in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/student-union\">Student Union<\/a>. They work out for an hour and a half almost every week.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/campus-recreation\/adapted-recreation#tab=workout-buddy\">Workout Buddy Program<\/a> allows students to set their own training schedule. Three student trainers and 12 students participated in the program since the spring semester.<\/p>\n<p>Moon has also been challenged while training Huff, saying the program has given him a better insight into understanding Huff\u2019s disability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has taught me that not everyone has it as easy as everyone else,\u201d he said. \u201cI understand that more.
