It was Tom Hanks. That was the clincher.<\/p>\n

When Lindsey Steller was shopping for graduate programs, she spotted a commercial that Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks did endorsing programs at Wright State University.<\/p>\n

Steller, who was traveling in Oregon at the time, scheduled a Skype interview with Wright State admissions officials and was soon admitted into the school\u2019s master\u2019s degree program in higher education<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Today, Steller \u2014 a self-described Type A personality and workaholic \u2014 is working on her master\u2019s, works as a graduate assistant in the Office of Student Activities<\/a>, is president of a graduate student organization, and is adviser for the Black Student Union and for Raiderthon, the annual dance marathon that raises money for Dayton Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n

Steller has also done two internships related to college admissions, most recently at Xavier University.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to work on a college campus, definitely with students,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Steller grew up in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, near Cincinnati. (\u201cIt\u2019s very small-town America. You kind of know everyone.\u201d) Before they retired, her father was a systems engineer at Procter & Gamble for 40 years and her mother worked as a nurse. (She is currently in culinary school.)<\/p>\n

The entire family \u2014 Steller has two older brothers \u2014 were into water sports. They enjoyed boating, water skiing and scuba diving.<\/p>\n

At Highlands High School, Steller played soccer, ran track and was on the school\u2019s robotics team, which took part in national competitions.<\/p>\n

She declared math as her major after enrolling at the University of Kentucky in 2010, but found physics too challenging and switched to Spanish.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really like the culture. It\u2019s very family oriented,\u201d she said of Spanish.<\/p>\n

After graduating in 2014, Steller spent a year traveling to college campuses around the country for her sorority as a leadership consultant. Then came the Hanks commercial, and Wright State popped up on her radar.<\/p>\n

Steller likes that inclusivity is such a big initiative at Wright State. She has come to realize that every student is \u201ctotally different.\u201d<\/p>\n
