{"id":44114,"date":"2017-02-15T09:55:06","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T14:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=44114"},"modified":"2022-09-26T12:10:56","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T16:10:56","slug":"wright-state-grad-hannah-beachler-sets-the-stage-in-hollywood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/02\/15\/wright-state-grad-hannah-beachler-sets-the-stage-in-hollywood\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State grad Hannah Beachler\u00a0sets the stage\u00a0in Hollywood"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_44119\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/02\/15\/wright-state-grad-hannah-beachler-sets-the-stage-in-hollywood\/hannah-beachler-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44119\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44119\" class=\"size-large wp-image-44119\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/02\/hannah-beachler-1-508x333.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hannah Beachler &#8217;05 will discuss her work as a production designer following a screening of \u201cMoonlight&#8221; on Feb. 19 at The Neon in downtown Dayton.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright State alumna Hannah Beachler recently set the stage, winning multiple awards for her production design on Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s album \u201cLemonade\u201d and for the movie \u201cMoonlight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beachler, a 2005 graduate of Wright State\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/theatre-dance-and-motion-pictures\/degrees-and-programs\/motion-pictures\">Motion Pictures program<\/a>, will discuss her work and answer questions from the audience following a screening of \u201cMoonlight&#8221; Sunday, Feb. 19, at noon at The Neon in downtown Dayton.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $7.50 for adults and $5 for college students. Attendees are encouraged to buy tickets in advance. The event is sponsored by the Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center.<\/p>\n<p>W. Stuart McDowell, professor and artistic director of the Wright State <a href=\"http:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/theatre-dance-and-motion-pictures\">Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures<\/a>, will also participate in the talkback session with Beachler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe will bring her experience, wisdom and a reality check for our students,\u201d McDowell said. \u201cAs well as being an inspiration to young female artists and workers in motion pictures, young African-Americans \u2014 a minority in motion pictures because it\u2019s a white male-dominated industry \u2014 Hannah is blazing the trail for young, African-American, female production designers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beachler won a 2017 Art Directors Guild Award for excellence in production design and art direction for her production design on \u201cLemonade.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She was also the production designer on \u201cMoonlight,\u201d which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture, Drama, and is nominated for Best Picture in the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n<p>She has worked as the production designer on \u201cMiles Ahead,\u201d a biographical film based on the life of jazz musician Miles Davis; \u201cCreed,\u201d the seventh film in the \u201cRocky\u201d series; and \u201cFruitvale Station,\u201d which won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Film and the Audience Award for Best Film at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Beachler is currently working as the production designer for the new Marvel film \u201cBlack Panther.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s \u201cLemonade&#8221; centers on an emotional journey of feeling alienation and betrayal to ultimately extending forgiveness. Beachler said she interpreted the album as a way of \u201creaching back into a time period that was not a place that holds fondness for African-Americans. We wanted to flip it on its head, make it a place of knowledge and peace, which was also the best part about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved designing for a strong woman of color on such a bold, original artistic expression,&#8221; Beachler told Dayton Most Metro.<\/p>\n<p>Beachler&#8217;s success in Hollywood is a reflection of her work while she was a student at Wright State. Her journey from Centerville to Hollywood has been one of passion and hard work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer success has shined because of her willingness to be resourceful, giving a voice to something unique and finding her inner passion,\u201d said McDowell.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Moonlight&#8221; portrays the story of a young black man as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a crime-filled neighborhood of Miami.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s relevant to the human condition,\u201d said Jonathan McNeal, manager of The Neon and a graduate of Wright State\u2019s Motion Pictures program.<\/p>\n<p>McDowell highlighted Beachler&#8217;s work on &#8220;Fruitvale Station,&#8221; with no budget, and &#8220;Moonlight,&#8221; which he described as one of the lowest budgets for a film ever nominated for best production of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a narrative film, based on the experiences of the director and writer,&#8221; he said, adding, &#8220;It speaks to the issues of everybody.
