Schrader named next president of Wright State University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cheryl B. Schrader, chancellor of Missouri University of Science and Technology, was named the next president of Wright State University and will become the first woman to lead the school in its 50-year history.<\/p>\n<p>Schrader emerged from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/presidential-search\">nine-month national search<\/a> and a diverse pool of 61 candidates to win selection by the Wright State Board of Trustees to become the university\u2019s seventh president.<\/p>\n<p>She was publicly introduced as Wright State\u2019s next president March 6 after the board approved her election during a meeting in the Student Union Atrium. She will succeed President David R. Hopkins when he retires June 30, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the right time to be at Wright State,\u201d said Schrader. \u201cThe university has built up its potential over the past decade and is poised to move to the next level. And that\u2019s where I would like to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44337\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/03\/06\/cheryl-b-schrader-named-next-president-of-wright-state-university\/cheryl-schrader-announcement-as-new-president-3-5-17-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44337\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44337\" class=\"wp-image-44337 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/03\/Cheryl-Schrader-_136-508x395.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cheryl B. Bridges said the challenges at Wright State are many and that higher education in Ohio and across the nation is at a crossroads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will take bold leadership to continue to move this great institution forward,\u201d said Bridges. \u201cThe board believes Dr. Schrader&#8217;s experience as a leader, innovator and educator makes her ideally suited to guide our university as we look ahead to the next 50 years of transforming the lives of our students and the communities we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridges also said Schrader&#8217;s extensive research and scholarship background will enable Wright State to strengthen and expand its research mission and connections, something that is essential to the future of the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, she brings a love of liberal arts, the humanities and athletics to this position,\u201d he said. \u201cThat combination will ensure that Wright State grows as a vibrant, comprehensive university highly attractive to students of all interests and backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe board felt that Cheryl was the best fit for Wright State University,\u201d added board Vice Chair Doug Fecher. \u201cCheryl\u2019s research background and her ability to meld that with the humanities and the arts is really quite remarkable. We were very impressed with that. We think she will do a great job for our university.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44335\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/03\/06\/cheryl-b-schrader-named-next-president-of-wright-state-university\/cheryl-schrader-announcement-as-new-president-3-5-17\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44335\" class=\"wp-image-44335\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/03\/Cheryl-Schrader-_066-473x700.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"355\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prior to joining Missouri of Science and Technology in 2012, Cheryl B. Schrader served as associate vice president for strategic research initiatives at Boise State University and dean of the College of Engineering at Boise State. She also held numerous administrative positions at The University of Texas at San Antonio.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Schrader <a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/02\/09\/wright-state-presidential-candidate-cheryl-schrader-says-universitys-diversity-research-and-breadth-of-academics-a-strong-drawing-card\/\">met with students, faculty, staff, administrators and community leaders<\/a> Feb. 8-9 in forums at the Dayton and Lake campuses.<\/p>\n<p>She praised the work being done by Wright State faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very much looking forward to getting to know them,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need to celebrate their accomplishments, and we need to do a better job of just lifting up all of the great things that are happening here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schrader said college presidents and chancellors must be resilient and authentic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you need to have that opportunity to embrace the culture and understand the people,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what I\u2019m very much looking forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schrader was the first woman to serve as chancellor at Missouri S&amp;T \u2014 which is 150 years old \u2014 when she took the position in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look at it this way,\u201d she said. \u201cWright State is ahead of the game if you have the first female president in 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schrader grew up in Illinois with a father who was a small-town minister and mother who later became a librarian and office manager.<\/p>\n<p>She received her bachelor\u2019s degree in electrical engineering from Valparaiso University and her master\u2019s and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44339\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/03\/06\/cheryl-b-schrader-named-next-president-of-wright-state-university\/cheryl-schrader_wjj8723-1-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44339\" class=\"wp-image-44339 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/03\/cheryl-schrader_WJJ8723-1-508x293.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cheryl B. As a researcher, Schrader has received several best paper awards; written more than 100 publications in the areas of systems and control, robotics and intelligent systems, with biomedical, networking and aircraft applications; and delivered more than 100 presentations and keynote addresses. Her grant and contract funding exceeds $11 million.<\/p>\n<p>Schrader said she already feels a strong connection to Wright State because of her days at Valparaiso, which like Wright State is a member of the Horizon League. Her fondest memory at Valparaiso, she said, was the opportunity to participate in its well-known Honors College, which gave her a base in the liberal arts that helped balance her engineering education.<\/p>\n<p>Before coming to Missouri S&amp;T, Schrader served as associate vice president for strategic research initiatives at Boise State University and dean of the College of Engineering at Boise State. She also held numerous administrative positions at The University of Texas at San Antonio, including associate dean for graduate studies and research for the College of Engineering and the College of Sciences, university graduate recruitment coordinator and associate director of the Center for Advanced Propulsion Studies.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, she interned at the McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company in Huntington Beach, California. She is a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring from the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Schrader said she was attracted to Wright State because of her experiences working with the military and health care partners, both of which are Wright State strengths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then as well, the focus on innovation, because universities need to be innovative. We need to think of new ways to do business and we have to be creative in our classrooms and also in our laboratories,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Schrader said higher education today looks much different than it did when she was a student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are facing a situation where we have more expectations and perhaps fewer resources. So we need to be very creative and innovative in how we do business and how we also interact with the students,\u201d she said. \u201cStudents are really our livelihood and that\u2019s why we\u2019re here. So being able to provide them with the best return on the investment that they make in us will require us to be working together as partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44338\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/03\/06\/cheryl-b-schrader-named-next-president-of-wright-state-university\/cheryl-schrader-announcement-as-new-president-3-5-17-4\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44338\" class=\"wp-image-44338 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/03\/Cheryl-Schrader-_202-260x258.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44338\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President-designate Schrader says she thrilled, energized and very grateful for the opportunity to become a Raider.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She called Wright State\u2019s student diversity \u201can asset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I\u2019ve talked about creating an environment that fosters innovation, you do that by bringing in a diversity of thought and a diversity of perspective,\u201d she said. \u201cCertainly, Wright State has been known as a very diverse place and a very accessible place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schrader\u2019s husband, Jeff, served for many years in the legal profession. The couple has a son, Andrew, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech, and a daughter, Ella, who attends elementary school in Rolla, Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>Schrader said she is excited and thrilled to be Wright State\u2019s next president, \u201cwith a little healthy nervousness put into that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut certainly I\u2019m energized and very grateful for this opportunity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cheryl B.
