{"id":45958,"date":"2017-06-01T12:24:17","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T16:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=45958"},"modified":"2017-06-01T12:24:18","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T16:24:18","slug":"change-is-in-the-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/06\/01\/change-is-in-the-air\/","title":{"rendered":"Change is in the air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/06\/01\/change-is-in-the-air\/tobacco-free-slide-2-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-45962\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-45962\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/06\/tobacco-free-slide-2-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a>In one month, Wright State University will become a tobacco-free campus, joining over 1,400 other colleges and universities in the U.S. that have chosen to become tobacco free.<\/p>\n<p>The new <a href=\"http:\/\/policy.wright.edu\/policy\/7230-tobacco-free-policy-be-effective-july-1-2017\">tobacco-free policy<\/a>, which takes effect July 1, will help promote a healthy environment in which students, staff, faculty and others can learn, work, live and visit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuitting tobacco is one of the most important things you can do for your health,\u201d said Doug Newton, Wright State\u2019s Wellness program director. \u201cOne of the guiding principles of Wright State\u2019s person-centered approach is to promote behaviors that support a healthy workforce and student body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To that end, the university is partnering with Public Health\u2014Dayton and Montgomery County and WCORHA WELLScript to continue to offer free tobacco cessation classes for faculty, staff and students at the Dayton and Lake campuses.<\/p>\n<p>The next round of classes include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dayton Campus:<\/strong><br \/>\nA five-week tobacco cessation course will be held June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 4\u20135 p.m. in the Employee Health and Wellness Center, 111B Medical Sciences building.<\/p>\n<p>Classes include free nicotine replacement therapy patches. Clinical best practice smoking cessation is modeled after the Mayo Clinic program. This course will take participants through the quitting process, from \u201cThinking About Quitting\u201d to \u201cStaying Quit For Good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lake Campus:<\/strong><br \/>\nA group tobacco cessation class will be offered on Thursdays, from 5\u20136 p.m. beginning June 8 in 152 Dwyer Hall. The course will last for five to eight weeks, depending on group size.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will receive an individualized quit plan and learn about proven strategies, relapse prevention and the best nicotine replacement therapy for them.<\/p>\n<p>For more details or to register, contact Doug Newton at <a href=\"mailto:doug.newton@wright.edu\">doug.newton@wright.edu<\/a> or 937-775-5256.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the first offerings of these cessation classes earlier this year, several employees and students successfully completed the program,\u201d Newton said.<\/p>\n<p>Wright State began investigating this initiative five years ago with a task force comprised of faculty, staff and students, as well as Public Health \u2013 Dayton and Montgomery County. After careful review, many surveys and campus discussions, the decision was made to become a tobacco-free campus.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning July 1, all smoking and smokeless tobacco products, as well as e-cigarettes, will be prohibited in all university facilities, on university-owned or leased grounds, and in university residence halls and apartments.
