{"id":46835,"date":"2017-07-31T09:42:57","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T13:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=46835"},"modified":"2022-09-28T10:26:40","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T14:26:40","slug":"wright-state-history-professors-expertise-featured-in-athens-banner-herald","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/07\/31\/wright-state-history-professors-expertise-featured-in-athens-banner-herald\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State history professor featured in Athens-Banner Herald"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Excerpt<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37186\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37186\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37186\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/06\/drew-swanson-15700_003-2-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"Drew Swanson in office\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drew Swanson, associate professor and graduate director of public history<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Few know that one of the nation\u2019s first gold rushes took place in Georgia during the first half of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the historical distinction, a Wright State environmental history professor called the era an ugly chapter of Georgia\u2019s past.<\/p>\n<p>Like the better-known gold rushes in California and Alaska, the Georgia gold rush has been romanticized, shaped by the myth of Appalachian \u201cexceptionalism,\u201d said Drew Swanson, who holds a University of Georgia doctorate.<\/p>\n<p>But it wreaked enormous environmental damage in the north Georgia mountains many people think of as pristine, explained Swanson in a recent talk.<\/p>\n<p>It was also an underlying reason for the forced eviction of Cherokee Indians and the Trail of Tears, Swanson recently told a packed auditorium in UGA\u2019s Russell Libraries Building, where librarians with the Hargrett Rare Books and Manuscripts Library have mounted an exhibit on Georgia\u2019s gold rush.<\/p>\n<p>The centerpiece of the exhibit is a collection of 62 gold coins \u2014 an example of every gold coin produced from 1829 to 1861 by a federal mint operating in Dahlonega.
