She says those types of experiences stick with people and get passed down. After the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Durr wrote an article titled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0896920515594766\">\u201cWhat is the Difference between Slave Patrols and Modern Day Policing?\u201d<\/a>\u00a0She says it\u2019s hard for some African-Americans to imagine being law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you do the comparison between slavery and contemporary times,\u201d Durr says. \u201cThey indeed would be the overseer. They would be watching their communities. They would be the ones to keep \u2018those people,\u2019 so to speak, in line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Durr says that becoming a police officer was once considered a major accomplishment in black communities, but \u201cpost-civil rights\u201d and \u201cpost-affirmative action,\u201d young African-Americans have more options. And with high profile police shootings in the news, many feel they would become targets if they joined law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently,\u201d Durr says, \u201cit has begun to feel like they would be attacked the same way white cops are being attacked. Simply because they wear blue. They don\u2019t think their skin color would help them anymore.
