{"id":48319,"date":"2017-10-05T11:00:25","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T15:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=48319"},"modified":"2022-09-28T10:23:39","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T14:23:39","slug":"preserving-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/10\/05\/preserving-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Preserving history"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_48298\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/10\/05\/preserving-history\/oct-13-vertical\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-48298\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48298\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48298\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/10\/Archives-renderings-First-Floor-Board-Named-Spaces-508x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright State launched a $6.5 million fundraising campaign to create the Wright State University Archives Center to house the Special Collections and Archives.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Amanda Wright Lane, great grandniece of Wilbur and Orville Wright, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough joined Wright State University officials on Oct. 4 to announce a $6.5 million fundraising campaign to create the Wright State University Archives Center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/giving\/special-collections-and-archives\">Discover Your Story: The Campaign for the Wright State University Archives Center<\/a> will transform the former corporate headquarters of the Wright-Patt Credit Union at 2455 Presidential Dr. into the new home of the university\u2019s world-renowned Special Collections and Archives.<\/p>\n<p>Scholars and aviation experts come to Wright State from all corners of the globe to see the largest Wright Brothers Collection in the world, first-edition works by Dayton poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, the archives of the Dayton Daily News and countless other historic treasures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom religious history to women\u2019s history to aviation history, local government records to the records of almost every major arts organization in Dayton, the history of our region, state, nation \u2014 even the world \u2014 is available for you to read, touch and explore,\u201d said Wright State University President Cheryl B. Schrader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the reality,\u201d Schrader added, \u201cis that we have run out of adequate space to preserve and protect these timeless treasures for future generations. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libraries.wright.edu\/special\/\">Special Collections and Archives<\/a> is bursting at the seams, and it\u2019s time to create a new home for our one-of-a-kind, world-class collections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The proposed Wright State University Archives Center will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A reading room where students, scholars and visitors may examine historic materials in an up-close and personal way<\/li>\n<li>An exhibit gallery housing rotating exhibitions that highlight the depth and breadth of Wright State\u2019s collections<\/li>\n<li>A conference room for lectures, meetings and special events<\/li>\n<li>A classroom to welcome area school children and students from Wright State\u2019s public history graduate program<\/li>\n<li>An oral history recording and teaching lab where students, faculty, researchers and the community can record their stories<\/li>\n<li>A media lab for listening and viewing oral histories and watching original film footage<\/li>\n<li>A preservation lab, processing room, clean room and exhibit prep room that will give staff the tools and space they need to adequately care for the history of the Dayton region<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_48299\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/10\/05\/preserving-history\/archives-at-help-desk\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-48299\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48299\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48299\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/10\/Archives-At-Help-Desk-508x329.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artist rendering of part of the reading room and help desk.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The facility will provide the proper storage and climate control to preserve historic materials. It will also serve as a learning laboratory for students in <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/history\/programs\/graduate\/public-history-concentration\">Wright State\u2019s graduate program in public history<\/a> where future archivists, preservationists and museum curators get hands-on experience in preserving and protecting priceless photographs, manuscripts and records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe currently occupy 12,000 square feet of space in two separate buildings of the Wright State University Libraries,\u201d said Dawne Dewey, head of Wright State University\u2019s Special Collections and Archives. \u201cOur new home, directly across from campus, will provide 30,000 square feet of space. It will also give us great visibility from Colonel Glenn Highway and dramatically improve public access and outreach efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Wright Lane and David McCullough will serve as co-chairs of the Discover Your Story campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vision for relocating Special Collections and Archives is to create a whole new visitors\u2019 experience and reach a much broader audience with our world-class collections,\u201d said Wright Lane. \u201cWhile the facility and staff will still be dedicated to the traditional work of processing, preserving and archiving important historic narratives, this beautiful new home will allow our team to share stories, organize exhibits and teach as they have never been able to before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCullough utilized Wright State\u2019s Special Collections and Archives when he was <a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2016\/04\/21\/author-david-mccullough-discusses-wrights-legacy-at-master-class\/\">researching his latest book, &#8220;The Wright Brothers<\/a>.&#8221; He had high praise for the archivists at Wright State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArchivists are one of the most important sources of help you will get. In many ways, they are as important as the collections themselves,\u201d McCullough told guests at the campaign launch event. \u201cWright State\u2019s Special Collections and Archives deserves more space. It deserves more attention. It deserves more care as time goes on.
