{"id":48862,"date":"2017-11-03T08:58:40","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T12:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=48862"},"modified":"2019-08-07T15:54:07","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T19:54:07","slug":"students-band-together-for-hurricane-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/11\/03\/students-band-together-for-hurricane-relief\/","title":{"rendered":"Students band together for hurricane relief"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_48868\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/11\/03\/students-band-together-for-hurricane-relief\/hurricane-relief-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-48868\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48868\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48868\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/11\/hurricane-relief-2-508x317.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With support from the Office of Latino Affairs, Wright State students have collected supplies and raised nearly $1,500 for hurricane relief.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The entrance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/student-affairs\/culture-and-identity-centers\/latino-affairs\">Office of Latino Affairs (OLA)<\/a> was surrounded by diapers, sleeping mats and water bottles ready to be shipped to Puerto Rico to aid in relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey.<\/p>\n<p>The hurricane hit Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, leaving the entire island without power and very limited communication. Students who have family in Puerto Rico were unable to contact family members to know if they were safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Wednesday, there were several students in the office and it was very quiet in here,\u201d said Julia Acosta, director of the OLA. \u201cThey were very worried, nervous, they were talking about their families and what they were going through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students banded together to see how they could help those affected by the hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the impact happened, we immediately started a drive, we immediately put tables out,\u201d Acosta said. \u201cThe students were here on weekends, in the mornings, in the evening, packing, organizing, developing flyers, putting their time in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Retired faculty members have also donated blankets, Wright-Patt Credit Union donated 50 cases of water, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is assisting with shipping supplies to Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day it\u2019s something more, organization after organization has stepped in,\u201d Acosta said. \u201cIt\u2019s just been overwhelming support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The work, Acosta said, brought the students closer together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey definitely came together as a family,\u201d she said. \u201cNot only Puerto Rican students, all students.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48867\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/11\/03\/students-band-together-for-hurricane-relief\/hurrican-relief\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-48867\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48867\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48867\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/11\/hurrican-relief-508x273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48867\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Office of Latino Affairs \u2014 located at 108A Student Union \u2014 will accept monetary donations until the end of the year.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The OLA has raised nearly $1,500 for hurricane relief from student-hosted bake sales and donations. After students gave a presentation about hurricane relief in the Department of Modern Languages, the OLA received more than $100 in donations from a Spanish class.<\/p>\n<p>The office \u2014 located at 108A Student Union \u2014 will accept monetary donations until the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 1, the OLA will host a comedy night at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium. All the proceeds from the event will go to Puerto Rico and Mexico for hurricane relief.
