{"id":50707,"date":"2018-03-01T13:38:36","date_gmt":"2018-03-01T18:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=50707"},"modified":"2018-03-01T13:38:57","modified_gmt":"2018-03-01T18:38:57","slug":"four-from-mens-basketball-honored-by-horizon-league","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2018\/03\/01\/four-from-mens-basketball-honored-by-horizon-league\/","title":{"rendered":"Four from men&#8217;s basketball honored by Horizon League"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50710\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2018\/03\/MBB_Honor_Web-508x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Head coach\u00a0Scott Nagy\u00a0and three players from the Wright State men&#8217;s basketball team received honors as the Horizon League announced its annual league awards Wednesday afternoon: Nagy was tabbed as Coach of the Year, senior\u00a0Grant Benzinger\u00a0was selected to the first team,\u00a0Loudon Love\u00a0was named Freshman of the Year and selected to the second team and junior\u00a0Mark Hughes\u00a0was voted to the All-Defensive Team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that the awards given out are essentially team awards for us, I think that&#8217;s how the guys look at it, and I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;re all very humbled for being honored,&#8221; Nagy said. &#8220;All three of them made tremendous contributions to our basketball team and certainly are very deserving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nagy, in his second year at Wright State, led the Raiders to a 22-9 and 14-4 record as WSU finished in second place.\u00a0 Nagy becomes the fourth Raider head coach to win the honor.\u00a0 The 14 league wins marked a new school record for conference wins and includes two victories over regular-season champion Northern Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>Benzinger, a guard from (Cincinnati, OH) Moeller High School, has led the Raiders in scoring all season and currently has a 14.6 points per game average, ranking eighth in the Horizon League.\u00a0 He scored in double figures in 24 games, including his season-best 31 points at Northern Kentucky.\u00a0 Benzinger, who was the Player of the Week on January 15, leads the league in free throw shooting at 89.1%, third in three-point shooting at 37.1%, fifth in minutes played at 34.4 per game as well as 18th in rebounding with an average of 4.9.<\/p>\n<p>Love, a center from (Geneva, IL) High School, was named the Freshman of the Week seven times this year as he led the league in rebounding at\u00a0 9.7 per game and averaged 12.7 points, which ranks 15th.\u00a0 He collected his career-high 19 rebounds against Milwaukee and his high of 25 points at Oakland.\u00a0 He also had 12 double-double performances while starting all 31 games.\u00a0 The freshman became the first WSU player to receive the Freshman of the Year honor after it was renamed from the previous Newcomer of the Year Award prior to the 2012-13 season.\u00a0 As the Newcomer of the Year Award, five Raiders received the honor.<\/p>\n<p>Hughes, a guard from (Youngstown, OH) Ursuline High School, has led the Raiders in steals with 37, as he helped the Raiders rank second in team defense in the Horizon League.\u00a0 He is the seventh Raider to appear on the Defensive Team since 2007.\u00a0 Hughes also averaged 10.1 points and 3.0 rebounds per game while hitting 57 three pointers.<\/p>\n<p>The Raiders will next play in the Little Caesars Horizon League Championship at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI.\u00a0 WSU will take on the winner of the Green Bay\/Detroit Mercy winner on Saturday at 5:30 pm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Player of the Year:\u00a0Kendrick Nunn, Oakland<\/p>\n<p>Coach of the Year:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsuraiders.com\/coaches.aspx?rc=483\">Scott Nagy<\/a>, Wright State<\/p>\n<p>Freshman of the Year:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsuraiders.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=2790\">Loudon Love<\/a>, Wright State<\/p>\n<p>Sixth Man of the Year:\u00a0Godwin Boahen, UIC<\/p>\n<p>Defensive Player of the Year:\u00a0Tai Odiase, UIC<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All-League First Team (alphabetical by school)<\/p>\n<p>Khalil Small, Green Bay<\/p>\n<p>Drew McDonald, Northern Kentucky<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Hayes, Oakland<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick Nunn, Oakland<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsuraiders.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=2783\">Grant Benzinger<\/a>, Wright State<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All-League Second Team (alphabetical by school)<\/p>\n<p>Kameron Chatman, Detroit Mercy<\/p>\n<p>Jeremiah Bell, Milwaukee<\/p>\n<p>Lavone Holland II, Northern Kentucky<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsuraiders.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=2790\">Loudon Love<\/a>, Wright State<\/p>\n<p>Cameron Morse, Youngstown State<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All-Freshman Team (alphabetical by school)<\/p>\n<p>Tyree Appleby, Cleveland State<\/p>\n<p>Jermaine Jackson Jr., Detroit Mercy<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Tate, Northern Kentucky<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsuraiders.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=2790\">Loudon Love<\/a>, Wright State<\/p>\n<p>Naz Bohannon, Youngstown State<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All-Defensive Team (alphabetical by school)<\/p>\n<p>Khalil Small, Green Bay<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Tate, Northern Kentucky<\/p>\n<p>Martez Walker, Oakland<\/p>\n<p>Tai Odiase, UIC<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsuraiders.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=2789\">Mark Hughes<\/a>, Wright State<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Head coach Scott Nagy and three players from the Wright State men&#8217;s basketball team received honors as the Horizon League announced its annual league awards Wednesday afternoon&#8230;
