{"id":50845,"date":"2018-03-07T14:14:51","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T19:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=50845"},"modified":"2022-09-26T13:54:40","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T17:54:40","slug":"us-news-world-report-wright-state-tops-cleveland-st-74-57-earns-ncaa-tourney-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2018\/03\/07\/us-news-world-report-wright-state-tops-cleveland-st-74-57-earns-ncaa-tourney-bid\/","title":{"rendered":"US News and World Report: Wright State Tops Cleveland St 74-57, Earns NCAA Tourney Bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Excerpt<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<div id=\"attachment_50848\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50848\" class=\"size-large wp-image-50848\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2018\/03\/Celebration-508x339.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50848\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wright State men&#8217;s basketball team is headed back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Grant Benzinger grew up watching the NCAA Tournament, looking up old highlights and locking in for &#8220;One Shining Moment,&#8221; with his dad, hoping to play in it someday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>His dream is about to come true.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>Benzinger had 19 points and nine rebounds to help second-seeded Wright State beat eighth-seeded Cleveland State 74-57 on Tuesday night to win the Horizon League Tournament title and earn an NCAA Tournament bid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great to be a part of it now,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>The Raiders (25-9) will play in the NCAAs for the third time in school history and the first since 2007.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-50852\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2018\/03\/IMG_0393-1-260x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"195\" \/>&#8220;I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ll probably have a pretty high seed and we&#8217;ll play one of the top nine or 12 teams in the country,&#8221; coach Scott Nagy said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>The Vikings (12-23) took their last lead with 7:36 left in the first half and seemed to wear down, playing their fourth game in five days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>Wright State took control late in the first half with a 13-2 run, taking an eight-point lead at halftime. The Raiders outscored Cleveland State 10-2 early in the second half to pull away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no excuse about being tired,&#8221; Cleveland State guard Kenny Carpenter said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>Loudon Love made his first field goal with 14:42 left to put the Raiders up 44-33. The 6-foot-9, 275-pound center finished with nine points and 12 rebounds, setting the school&#8217;s freshman scoring record and its single-season mark for rebounds. Wright State&#8217;s Cole Gentry and Jaylon Hall scored 11 points apiece.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>&#8220;Love displaced us all game,&#8221; Cleveland State coach Dennis Felton said. &#8220;We did a very, very good job establishing position, but he was just very persistent and very physical.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50853\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2018\/03\/IMG_0399-508x381.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"345\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>&#8220;To play in front of family, it&#8217;s just special,&#8221; Carpenter said. &#8220;It was a great experience and I&#8217;ll never forget it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>BIG PICTURE<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>Cleveland State : Felton, who led Georgia and Western Kentucky to the NCAA Tournament, guided the low-seeded team to one-point wins over Northern Kentucky and fourth-seeded Oakland near its suburban Detroit campus to advance to the finals. That gave the Vikings their first four-game winning streak in four-plus years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>&#8220;Even before this run to the championship, I know we accomplished a lot this year because we kept improving,&#8221; said Felton, who was in his first year at the school.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-50851\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2018\/03\/IMG_0416-260x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"195\" \/>Wright State: Nagy led South Dakota State to the NCAA Tournament in 2016 for third time in five years. The Horizon League Coach of the Year can use that experience to help his players, who were young kids the last time the Raiders were in the NCAA Tournament 11 years ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>&#8220;Coach knows what it takes to get there and what to do when you&#8217;re there, so we&#8217;ll just follow his lead,&#8221; Benzinger said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>IN SUPPORT<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Raw-edht6g-0 jbNyZH\">\n<p>Wright State&#8217;s postgame celebration included giving Ryan Custer a championship cap.
