{"id":51906,"date":"2018-04-23T10:33:42","date_gmt":"2018-04-23T14:33:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=51906"},"modified":"2024-07-29T12:27:45","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T16:27:45","slug":"more-than-2000-students-to-graduate-at-wright-states-2018-spring-commencement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2018\/04\/23\/more-than-2000-students-to-graduate-at-wright-states-2018-spring-commencement\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 2,000 students to graduate at Wright State\u2019s 2018 spring commencement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2016\/12\/12\/more-than-1150-to-graduate-at-wright-states-fall-commencement-ceremony\/commencement-17422_281\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43479\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43479\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2016\/12\/commencement-17422_281-508x338.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a>More than 2,000 students are expected to graduate during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/event\/commencement\/ceremony-information\">Wright State University\u2019s 2018 spring commencement ceremony<\/a> Saturday, April 28.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in the Wright State Nutter Center. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/event\/commencement\/ceremony-information#tickets\">Tickets are required<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime Dayton native Margaret Peters, whose teaching, writing and activism have had a profound impact in advancing civil rights and the field of African-American history, will receive an honorary degree during the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The class of 2018 includes graduates with 1,429 bachelor\u2019s degrees, 602 master\u2019s, 15 doctorates of philosophy, as well as those awarded associate degrees and post-master\u2019s certificates.<\/p>\n<p>The class features graduates from 66 Ohio counties, including 1,461 from the 16 counties anchored by Wright State\u2019s Dayton and Lake campuses. Graduates hail from a total of 27 states.<\/p>\n<p>The class also includes 202 international students from 34 different nations. India boasts the largest number of foreign graduates with 70.<\/p>\n<p>The graduating students from the class range in age from 19 to 85.<\/p>\n<p>John Niklas will receive the first Wright State doctorate in interdisciplinary applied science and math.<\/p>\n<p>Graduates by college:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>College of Education and Human Services: 354<\/li>\n<li>College of Engineering and Computer Science: 441<\/li>\n<li>College of Liberal Arts: 467<\/li>\n<li>College of Nursing and Health: 152<\/li>\n<li>College of Science and Mathematics: 283<\/li>\n<li>Raj Soin College of Business: 279<\/li>\n<li>Lake Campus: 44<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The commencement ceremony will be broadcast live on WSU-TV on Time Warner Cable channel 21.105 in the university dorms and Fairborn and regionally on AT&amp;T Uverse channel 99 in the Dayton tab.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony can also be seen online at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/streaming\">wright.edu\/streaming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone unable to secure a ticket can also watch the ceremony remotely in the Wright State Student Union.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Notable class of 2018 graduates<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43812\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/01\/23\/chain-reaction\/david-baugham-18280_418\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43812\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43812\" class=\"size-large wp-image-43812\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2017\/01\/david-baugham-18280_418-508x378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright State\u00a0senior David Baugham plans to use a supply chain management degree and experience in the nonprofit sector to build a career. (Photo by Will Jones)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Chain reaction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>David Baugham, who is majoring in supply chain management and minoring in nonprofit management, also earned a certification in nonprofit management through Wright State\u2019s Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, which provides training for the next generation of leaders in the social services sector<\/p>\n<p>Baugham served as president of the alliance\u2019s Wright State chapter and was appointed to the student council of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance national organization, raising the visibility of the campus program nationally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I would like to do is combine my knowledge of supply chain with my love for the social sector and nonprofits and be able to use that to work as a project manager or director of a global relief organization such as the American Red Cross,\u201d said Baugham.<\/p>\n<p>Baugham has interned and worked at Good Samaritan Hospital. He and his parents have also worked as simulation patients at the Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine, helping train medical students by pretending to be sick patients or their family members.<\/p>\n<p>Baugham is active in student leadership. He served as director of academic affairs for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/student-government-association\">Student Government Association<\/a>, then speaker of the House and, most recently, president.<\/p>\n<p>He also has musical talent. (Photo by Erin Pence)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Latino locomotive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Patino-Garfias, who is majoring in political science and international studies with a minor in Arabic, is an activist in the areas of immigration, social justice and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>When she was a freshman, she helped raise money for the families of 43 students from a teachers\u2019 college in Mexico who were kidnapped in 2014 and feared to have been killed. She met with two of the family members and gave them a $1,000 donation that had been raised in three weeks at Wright State.<\/p>\n<p>Patino-Garfias was selected for a 2017 Newman Civic Fellowship, a prestigious national program that seeks to develop a new generation of leaders who can build relationships and bridge differences to address inequality and polarization in the nation\u2019s communities.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the fellowship, she met with immigrants from Guatemala, El Salvador and the former Burma, now known as Myanmar. She actually accompanied an immigration attorney into the fields and spoke to farmworkers about their legal rights. She later created her own outreach program and went into the schools to talk about immigration rights. She also gave a \u201cKnow Your Rights\u201d presentation to immigrants at the Mexican consulate when it held office hours in Dayton.<\/p>\n<p>Patino-Garfias has studied abroad in India and Morocco, where she helped feed Syrian refugees. (Photo by Erin Pence)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Photo finish<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The memories grip the wall of her apartment bedroom \u2014 row after row of snapshots. More than 400 in all.<\/p>\n<p>There are photos of friends, plays, tai chi, a cup of coffee, a slice of pizza and even a professor skiing to class. They were taken by Megan Valle, a senior <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/theatre-dance-and-motion-pictures\/degrees-and-programs\/musical-theatre\">musical theatre major at Wright State University<\/a> who has become known as \u201cThe Girl With the Camera Usually in Her Hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valle has taken a photo at Wright State nearly every day since Aug. 27, 2015, when she arrived on campus to begin her sophomore year. As a result, she has a colorful, growing photographic tapestry of her final three years at the university staring back at her.<\/p>\n<p>At Wright State, Valle has performed in about a dozen productions, including \u201cPeter Pan,\u201d \u201cChicago,\u201d \u201cA Streetcar Named Desire,\u201d \u201cMiss Mayor,\u201d \u201cNo, No, Nanette!,\u201d \u201cChildren\u2019s Hour,\u201d \u201cFiddler on the Roof\u201d and \u201cThe Mystery of Edwin Drood.\u201d She has taken dance and acting classes, done some directing and choreographing and wrote her own one-person show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really grateful just to come to Wright State and be able to do what I love every day,\u201d she said. \u201c\u2026I couldn\u2019t have asked for a better four years in college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Valle wants to pursue a theater career in New York City.
