One of Wright State\u2019s most purr-fect former students is expected to return to her old stomping grounds.<\/p>\n

A lot has changed for former Pussycat Dolls lead singer\u00a0Nicole Scherzinger<\/b>\u00a0since her days playing\u00a0Julie LaVerne<\/b>\u00a0in Wright State\u2019s 1998\u00a0 production of \u201cShow Boat\u201d opposite\u00a0Michael Mueller<\/b>as\u00a0Pete.\u00a0<\/b>She also\u00a0played\u00a0Velma<\/b>\u00a0in \u201cChicago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scherzinger, who studied musical theater and dance at the Fairborn university from 1996 to 1999, will receive the 2017 Alumna of the Year Award from the Wright State Alumni Association on Monday Aug. 27. She was unable to attend last year\u2019s ceremony.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe awards committee, made up of Nicole\u2019s fellow degreed and non-degreed alumni, selected her because of her international acclaim, multiple award nominations, including Grammy and Olivier, and platinum-selling albums combined with her frequent acknowledgement of Wright State University as an important influence in her growth and success,\u201d\u00a0Greg Scharer<\/b>, executive director of alumni relations, said as\u00a0part of a post on Wright State\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

None of the programs are open to the general public.<\/p>\n

Scherzinger will participate in\u00a0several private events and classes in Wright State\u2019s Creative Arts Center including a\u00a0 question-and-answer session with students, faculty and university supporters facilitated by\u00a0Joe Deer<\/b>, chair of the\u00a0Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Picture.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer obvious talent and, almost as striking, her kindness were undeniable,\u201d Deer, Scherzinger\u2019s professor during her time at the school, said in a Wright State post. \u201cI have had students with either great talent or incredible drive and focus. But Nicole is the rare student with both.\u201d<\/p>\n

During her time with the Pussycat Dolls, the group was nominated for a Grammy for the 2007\u2019s “Stickwitu.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group lost to \u201cMy Humps” by The Black Eyed Peas for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.<\/p>\n

Scherzinger has sold 37 million singles worldwide as an solo artist and with the Pussycat Dolls.<\/p>\n

Born in Hawaii and raised in Louisville, Scherzinger has\u00a0starred in the acclaimed musical \u201cRent\u201d at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for playing \u201cGrizabella\u201d in \u201cCats.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has hosted \u201cThe X Factor\u201d in the U.S. and UK and been a judge and actress on a number of other TV shows.<\/p>\n
