As a first-generation American, Wright State nursing student wants to provide care in the Hispanic community within the greater Dayton area.<\/p><\/div>\n

When Rosa Aguilar was growing up, she found herself in doctors\u2019 offices constantly \u2014 not due to her own illness, but to serve as a translator for her Spanish-speaking parents. As a first-generation American, it was often expected of her to provide her English language skills to her family and others in her community.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up as a first-generation American in my family meant I held countless expectations \u2014 expectations including translating for my parents and eventually others around me struggling to learn a new culture, a new world,\u201d she said. \u201cI often helped my parents by translating in doctors\u2019 visits, where a translator wasn\u2019t readily available.\u201d<\/p>\n

While she served as a translator for her parents, she often witnessed errors or misunderstandings from doctors and nurses, \u201cmostly due to discrimination or simply the fact that we were being overlooked,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

It was during these difficult visits and hardships she endured with her family that she decided to apply to Wright State to become a nurse.<\/p>\n

Choosing the nursing program at Wright State<\/a> was easy, Aguilar said. The campus is just a 10-minute commute from her home in Dayton, where she lives with her parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWright State has a wonderful nursing program,\u201d she said. \u201cI love the facility and simulations. Plus, Wright State offers different opportunities for studying and tutoring at the Student Success Center.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, just a few years ago, Aguilar almost lost her chance to go to college and almost did not even graduate from high school after her father lost his job. Her family struggled to buy groceries and pay their mortgage for nearly six months while her father looked for work.<\/p>\n

She knew that her dream of going to college would bring her parents nothing but joy and hope for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents have worked all their lives to bring me to this point in my life, as a college student,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why it was so important and exciting, Aguilar said, to have received the Rise.Shine. Scholarship, which supports the student success priorities for the Rise.Shine. <\/a>Campaign, which concluded last summer, raising more than $167 million. With this financial help, Aguilar can focus more on her studies and less about accumulating crippling student debt.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scholarships have helped me avoid student loans as much as I can,\u201d she said. \u201cThank you to all the donors who have contributed to the scholarships. Without the contributions, I wouldn\u2019t be able to continue my education and follow my dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n

That dream, she says, is very specific. Aguilar wishes to become part of the only 4 percent of Hispanic nurses in the United States, focusing her work solely in the Hispanic community within the greater Dayton area.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always knew I wanted to be a part of the health care system, especially because a lot of Latinos avoid health care because they believe no one will understand them and they won\u2019t receive quality care,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to be their advocate and their voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, as of 2017, only 4 percent of registered nurses are Hispanic. However, the Hispanic population now accounts for about 18 percent of the U.S. population and is projected to reach 30 percent of the nation\u2019s population by 2050, according to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Pew Research Center. Despite these statistics, the lack of diversity in the nursing workforce remains an issue, especially among Hispanics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to help alleviate the language barriers between health care and the patient to avoid mistakes and raise satisfaction,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Aguilar is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Wright State College of Nursing and Health<\/a>. She also wishes to enter the workforce for several years as a neonatal or public health nurse, then return to Wright State to become a nurse practitioner, her \u201cdream job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c(As a nurse practitioner), I would like to someday open my own practice dedicated to advocating for immigrant families from different cultures, so that they receive quality care at lower costs and in their own language,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Aguilar looks forward to graduating debt free, and showing her parents how much their support has meant to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents are amazing individuals and I only wish to be able to pay them back for are their hard work, love and support,\u201d she said. \u201cThese scholarships have truly helped me and my family pursue the American dream. After I graduate, I would love to become a donor, so that someone like me can follow their<\/em> dreams at Wright State.\u201d<\/p>\n
