(Photos by Erin Pence)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An elections project at the Dayton Regional STEM School led by Wright State University alumnus James Smith and designed to engage first-time voters has received national attention.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times mentioned the project as part of the newspaper\u2019s collection of ideas from schoolteachers around the nation on how to use the mid-term elections as an opportunity for teaching and learning.<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s 11th-grade government students <a href=\"https:\/\/first-time-voters-guide.weebly.com\/\">created an online nonpartisan elections guide<\/a> to educate first-time voters about the process and requirements of voting and to enlighten them about the candidates and the issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only did we learn about voting, but we learned how to work together as teacher and student,\u201d said Smith, who graduated from Wright State in April 2018 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/education-human-services.wright.edu\/teacher-education\/master-of-education-and-licensure-in-middle-childhood-education\">degree in middle childhood education<\/a>. \u201cIt was really cool to see the students engaged with different levels of government that maybe people aren\u2019t as familiar with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The STEM school, a Wright State affiliate that opened in 2009, uses project-based learning to teach students in grades six through 12. The current 670 students come from 30 different school districts in six counties. Virtually the entire faculty and staff of the school are Wright State employees.<\/p>\n<p>Smith and his students started the elections project in early October, with the primary goal to engage and support first-time voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe content is: How do I vote when I\u2019m old enough? What does it mean to be nonpartisan? How do we present things fairly without being on one side or the other?\u201d said Smith, recipient of Wright State\u2019s Middle Childhood Education Graduate Student Excellence Award for 2017-2018. \u201cThe students did a nice job with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students used the League of Women Voters as a resource.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of their editors came in and gave tips to the students,\u201d said Smith. \u201cThe league sends a survey out to each of their candidates, and they don\u2019t edit the candidates\u2019 responses at all. So we did the same thing except the questions that we used we created.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54724\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/james-smith-election-project-20616_004\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54724\" class=\"size-large wp-image-54724\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2018\/11\/James-Smith-election-project-20616_004-508x284.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Smith graduated from Wright State in April 2018 with a degree in middle childhood education.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Umar Atlagh, a student from Miamisburg, said he first had to research what an auditor does before sending out surveys to the auditor candidates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo come up with the questions specifically I went to the Montgomery County Auditor\u2019s page and looked at what some of their duties are. And then I formed my questions based on that,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of them was what are your plans for the county budget? What do you think makes a good auditor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dayton student Jordan Young sent his surveys to judicial candidates for Common Pleas Court and Juvenile Court, asking their positions on various issues and what their opinion is of the ideal judge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal of this was not only to inform upcoming voters of what\u2019s going on in their districts and counties, but also inform us about how those things work and give us a good sense of the structure,\u201d Young said. \u201cI think that was very important.
