{"id":54767,"date":"2018-11-05T11:15:16","date_gmt":"2018-11-05T16:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=54767"},"modified":"2018-11-05T11:15:16","modified_gmt":"2018-11-05T16:15:16","slug":"leading-the-way-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2018\/11\/05\/leading-the-way-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Leading the way\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_54772\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2018\/11\/05\/leading-the-way-2\/20538-kim-patton-alumni-tyler-rose-10-3-18\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-54772\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54772\" class=\"size-large wp-image-54772\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2018\/11\/tyler-rose-20538_003-1-508x409.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2017 Wright State graduate Tyler Rose benefited from the Student Government Scholarship.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><\/b><i><\/i><span class=\"s1\">Tyler Rose \u201917 still remembers the feeling of surprise \u2014 and relief \u2014 when he learned that he was a recipient of the Student Government Scholarship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was pretty shocked,\u201d Rose recalled. \u201cIt helped me so much throughout my college career. I didn\u2019t have to take out as many student loans. By saving that money, it will help me succeed that much farther in the long run.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For Rose, the benefits of being awarded a scholarship were more than just financial. The scholarship was also a validation of his commitment to his studies and his leadership as president of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt helped me stay motivated throughout school,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a great reminder that if I kept working hard and kept pushing myself to be the best student and the best student leader, it was going to pay off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Since its inception in 2004, the Student Government Scholarship has been helping student leaders across campus make their dreams of a college education a reality. As the amount of the scholarship awards began to vary over the years, Student Government leadership and alumni decided they wanted to make more of an impact on future generations of Wright State students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2015, they launched a fundraising initiative to raise $10,000 to endow the Student Government Scholarship. By creating an endowment, the scholarship would live in perpetuity and generate annual scholarship awards for exceptional student leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Three years later, the Student Government Endowed Scholarship is the first endowed scholarship established by a student organization at Wright State. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis has been a true student and alumni collaboration. We have all worked very hard, and I credit Student Government leadership. They really got us over the finish line by stepping up and engaging current students and staff on campus,\u201d said Jason Lansdale \u201900, who helped lead alumni fundraising efforts for the scholarship and is secretary to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightstatealumni.com\/\">Wright State Alumni Board of Directors<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The success of the scholarship has personal meaning for Lansdale, who served as chief justice for Student Government when he was a student in the late 1990s. \u201cWe saw Student Government alumni from across the years step up and contribute to ensure this scholarship hit the initial $10,000 mark for endowment,\u201d he explained. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Additionally, Student Government alumni have been working with current <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/student-government-association\">Student Government Association (SGA)<\/a> administrations in a mentorship capacity by hosting conference calls and being available to discuss current SGA challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe endowment of this scholarship is one of several strategic ways our Student Government alumni are giving back and helping current campus leaders,\u201d said Lansdale. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Holley Mapel, who served as SGA vice president during the 2017\u20132018 academic year, looks forward to making her first gift to the newly endowed scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI know for me, I have been positively impacted by the Wright State University community and supported with scholarships so much that I hope to be a life-long contributor,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Former scholarship recipient Tyler Rose, who currently works as an analyst in the marketing analytics department at Speedway\u2019s corporate headquarters, also hopes to help out one day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWright State did a lot for me during my time here,\u201d he said, \u201cand I\u2019d love to be able to give back to provide the same opportunities for others.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Student Government Association and alumni helped create the Student Government Endowed Scholarship, the first endowed scholarship established by a student organization at Wright State. <a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2018\/11\/05\/leading-the-way-2\/\" class=\"morelink\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":54773,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[733,2040,725,715],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-54767","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-alumni","category-giving","category-home-news-sidebar","category-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54767","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=54767"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54767\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":54776,"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54767\/revisions\/54776"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/54773"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=54767"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=54767"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=54767"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
