(Photos by Erin Pence)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They\u2019re freshmen. They\u2019re engineering majors. And they\u2019re roommates in Wright State University\u2019s Honors Community. So you would think there would be a lot of banter about algorithms and hydraulics.<\/p>\n<p>And there probably is. But there is also talk about harmony, melody and pitch.<\/p>\n<p>Engineering students Ryan Slater and Alex Vehre are accomplished musicians who play in pit orchestras, a select and demanding world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA mathematical mind really helps with engineering, and I think music goes hand in hand with math,\u201d said Slater. \u201cI can do a math equation and it might be enjoyable to me, but music is a way to express myself. So it kind of rounds me out as an individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slater grew up in Bellbrook. He started playing the trumpet in middle school, inspired by the trumpet playing of his father, Joseph Slater, who is chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/mechanical-and-materials-engineering\">Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering<\/a> in the Wright State <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/\">College of Engineering and Computer Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething clicked, and I really fell in love with it,\u201d said the younger Slater.<\/p>\n<p>He played the trumpet in high school musicals and was first selected to play in a professional pit orchestra when he was a junior in high school, for \u201cYoung Frankenstein.\u201d He has been in pit orchestras for five different musicals, most recently for \u201cThe Hunchback of Notre Dame\u201d at the Victoria Theatre for three shows in September.<\/p>\n<p>Pit orchestras accompany performers in musicals, operas, ballets and other shows involving music, which must be coordinated with the performers.<\/p>\n<p>Judy Mansky, director of the pit orchestra for \u201cHunchback,\u201d said musicians in pit orchestras must not only be good but also aware and flexible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s live theater and literally anything can happen at any given time,\u201d she said. \u201cAn actor skips a verse or drops a line, and the orchestra as a whole has to swerve to catch the fix. It&#8217;s a special skill to be that tuned in to not just your fellow musicians but what&#8217;s happening onstage as well. It&#8217;s not for the faint of heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pit orchestra musicians sit in a lowered area in front of the stage, out of the view of the audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is we\u2019re invisible,\u201d said Slater.<\/p>\n<p>Mansky applauds Victoria Theatre for using live music in its productions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s not done everywhere, and people tend to take it for granted when it is there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54840\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/01\/15\/pit-stop\/20548-jim-hannah-ryan-slater-and-alexander-vavehre-daytons-pit-orchestra-10-4-18\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-54840\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54840\" class=\"size-large wp-image-54840\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2018\/11\/engineering-musicians-20548_006-508x328.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ryan Slater and Alex Vehre performed together as members of the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Vehre, a <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/mechanical-and-materials-engineering\/bachelor-of-science-in-mechanical-engineering\">mechanical engineering major<\/a>, grew up in Greenville. His mother is a physician who works at a Greenville clinic, and his father is director of the Greenville Public Library.<\/p>\n<p>Vehre started playing the violin in second grade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to explore some kind of art, and music is the art for me,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve never been the most talented visual artist; I\u2019m not so great with perspective. But music just clicks with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Slater and Vehre were in the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra at the same time but didn\u2019t really get to know each other until they were assigned as roommates at Wright State this year.<\/p>\n<p>Vehre has twice played in pit orchestra productions, once with Slater.<\/p>\n<p>Mansky, who has a degree in flute performance from the Dana School of Music and is an active freelance musician, says she enjoys having non-music majors in the orchestra because of the diversity they bring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey introduce new elements into the conversation. It&#8217;s great to hear about something other than theory exams and junior recitals,\u201d she said. \u201cThey do left-brain stuff all day then get to be all creative and right-brain at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Engineering felt like a natural fit to Vehre careerwise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been pretty good at math, and I love the STEM fields,\u201d he said. \u201cI love how everything works together, and I love efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slater, a <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/computer-science-and-engineering\/bachelor-of-science-in-computer-engineering\">computer engineering major<\/a>, become interested in engineering in middle school. He participated in science fairs and was part of FIRST LEGO League, an international competition that includes designing and programming robots.<\/p>\n<p>During the summers, he interned at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base through the Wright Scholar Research Assistant Program and worked in the Materials and Sensors directorates. He is currently embarking on an internship at the Air Force Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>During his internships, Slater taught himself how to write Python, a high-level computer programming language designed to be flexible and emphasize readability.<\/p>\n<p>Slater and Vehre\u2019s passion for engineering is even evident in their dorm room.<\/p>\n<p>Tracing the edge of the ceiling is a string of LED lights programmed to change color with the weather. Sunny skies keeps them yellow; high temps turn them red; low temps turn them blue.
