{"id":56905,"date":"2015-09-01T09:54:08","date_gmt":"2015-09-01T13:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2015\/09\/01\/early-career-achievement-6\/"},"modified":"2019-02-12T10:47:47","modified_gmt":"2019-02-12T15:47:47","slug":"early-career-achievement-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2015\/09\/01\/early-career-achievement-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Early Career Achievement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7716\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/dialogue\/files\/2015\/07\/Drew-Swanson-02-7-15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7716\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7716\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/dialogue\/files\/2015\/07\/Drew-Swanson-02-7-15-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Drew Swanson\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drew Swanson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When one sees abandoned fields and erosion gullies it\u2019s uncommon they\u2019d think to write a book about such an environment.<\/p>\n<p>Drew Swanson, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of History, saw an opportunity for environmental research and has become more than just another author.<\/p>\n<p>With two books down and a third on its way, Swanson has become one of the few historians \u201cto publish multiple monographs in the field of Southern environmental history,\u201d and has become \u201ca central figure\u201d in the field, said Mark Hersey, director of the Center for the History of Agriculture, Science and the Environment of the South.<\/p>\n<p>Swanson\u2019s doctoral dissertation was recognized in 2011 by the Southern Historical Association and was awarded the C. Vann Woodward Prize, a highly competitive and prestigious award given to the best dissertation in Southern history.<\/p>\n<p>Swanson\u2019s dissertation was published in the Yale University Press prestigious Agrarian Studies Series in 2014. His book is called \u201cA Golden Weed: Tobacco and Environment in the Piedmont South.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While writing the dissertation in which \u201cGolden Weed\u201d is based, he also researched on the Wormsloe plantation. This project became Swanson\u2019s first book titled, \u201cRemaking Wormsloe Plantation: The Environmental History of a Lowcountry Landscape\u201d published in 2012. The work is said to be the best book on Georgia history produced that year.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, three different journal editors submitted articles published by Swanson, each on a different topic, for the Jack Temple Kirby award, which is given to journal articles on Southern agricultural or environmental history.<\/p>\n<p>His third book is on the environmental history of Appalachia.<\/p>\n<p>While at Wright State, Swanson is just as appreciated and respected as he is in the studies of environmental history. His unusual history courses ring popular with students.<\/p>\n<p>Students at all levels appreciate Swanson\u2019s deep subject knowledge and teaching style. \u201cSwanson is surely one of the university\u2019s most effective and inspiring teachers,\u201d said faculty and staff in the Department of History.<\/p>\n<p>Swanson chairs the department\u2019s Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and sits on the adhoc Assessment Committee for Reaccreditation.
