Banks Memorial Lecture in Philosophy will be held Tuesday, March 26, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Discovery Room (163) of the Student Union. It is free and open to the campus community and public.<\/p>\n<p>Patton is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Virginia Tech and the editor of HOPOS, the journal of the International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science.<\/p>\n<p>Patton\u2019s lecture is titled \u201cPicturing Democracy: How Data Visualization Promoted the Free Exchange of Ideas.\u201d Patton will discuss the work of Marie and Otto Neurath, Austrian philosophers who developed isotope, a pictorial language for statistics. Isotope is used to promote public understanding of research data and the free and open exchange of ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Patton is also editor of \u201cLaws of Nature\u201d and the author of \u201cPhilosophy, Science, and History: A Guide and Reader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lecture honors Banks, professor of philosophy at Wright State from 2006 to 2017 and author of \u201cThe Realistic Empiricism of Mach, James and Russell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event is sponsored by the University Honors Program and the <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/religion-philosophy-and-classics\">Department of Religion, Philosophy and Classics<\/a> in the College of Liberal Arts.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/religion-philosophy-and-classics\/about\/annual-lectures#tab=erik-c-banks-lecture\">wright.edu\/drpc<\/a> or call 937-775-2274.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Erik C.
