{"id":68882,"date":"2019-05-29T08:50:33","date_gmt":"2019-05-29T12:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=68882"},"modified":"2019-05-30T08:16:28","modified_gmt":"2019-05-30T12:16:28","slug":"whio-wright-state-professor-emeritus-dayton-area-filmmaker-to-be-saluted-by-famed-new-york-museum-for-50-years-of-groundbreaking-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/05\/29\/whio-wright-state-professor-emeritus-dayton-area-filmmaker-to-be-saluted-by-famed-new-york-museum-for-50-years-of-groundbreaking-work\/","title":{"rendered":"WHIO: Wright State professor emeritus, Dayton-area filmmaker to be saluted by famed New York museum for 50 years of groundbreaking work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Excerpt<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8044\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8044\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8044\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2011\/09\/Julia-Reichert-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Julia Reichert\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Motion Pictures professor emeritus Julia Reichert<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"cmgo_is_paragraph\">The five decade-long career of one of the Dayton area\u2019s most acclaimed filmmakers will be celebrated with a special exhibition in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">The series \u201c<b>Julia Reichert: 50 Years in Film<\/b>\u201d is set for May 30 to June 8 at the Museum of Modern Art in Midtown Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cmgo_is_paragraph\">Reichert and her partner, fellow filmmaker and collaborator\u00a0<b>Steven Bognar,\u00a0<\/b>reside\u00a0in\u00a0Yellow\u00a0Springs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">They picked up the U.S. documentary directing award for their film \u201cAmerican Factory\u201d at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">Netflix plans to release the film shot at the Fuyao Glass America plant in Moraine.<\/p>\n<p>It is among the first projects expected to be released as part of a partnership between the streaming service and President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama\u2019s production company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">\u201cBeginning with her debut,\u00a0<i>Growing Up Female<\/i>\u00a0(made with Jim Klein in 1971), considered the first feature documentary of the modern women\u2019s movement \u2014 and a recent addition to the National Film Registry \u2014 the series showcases all of Reichert\u2019s feature documentaries,\u201d part of the MoMA salute description reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">The retrospective is being organized by the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University in Columbus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">After its debut in New York, the series will be featured at the Wexner Center for the Arts Oct. 2-30. It will also appear at the Cleveland Cinematheque, the Speed Museum in Louisville, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Springs, Md.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">Reichert has won many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dayton.com\/lifestyles\/yellow-springs-filmmaker-receives-prestigious-international-award\/mP4q4TDhBrZteFye77lduL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prestigious honors in her career.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">\u201cA Lion in the House,\u201d made with Bognar in 2006, won the Primetime Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking, and the Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Film and Digital Media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">Her films \u2014 \u201cUnion Maids\u201d (1977), \u201cSeeing Red\u201d (1984) and \u201cThe Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant\u201d (2010) \u2014 were Academy Award nominees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">The retired Wright State University film professor served as associate producer on Illinois filmmaker Edgar A. Barens\u2019 short documentary \u201cPrison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall.\u201d That film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">She won the Chicken and Egg Pictures inaugural Breakthrough Filmmaker Award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\">The MoMA stop includes the following screenings:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p cmgo_is_paragraph\"><b>American Factory\u00a0<\/b>|\u00a0 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30.
