{"id":69086,"date":"2019-05-31T11:41:19","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T15:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=69086"},"modified":"2022-09-28T11:06:11","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T15:06:11","slug":"wright-state-grad-jim-mccutcheon-takes-top-spot-in-ohio-federation-of-music-clubs-adult-composer-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/05\/31\/wright-state-grad-jim-mccutcheon-takes-top-spot-in-ohio-federation-of-music-clubs-adult-composer-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State grad Jim McCutcheon takes top spot in Ohio Federation of Music Clubs Adult Composer Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_69094\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/05\/31\/wright-state-grad-jim-mccutcheon-takes-top-spot-in-ohio-federation-of-music-clubs-adult-composer-contest\/jim-mccutcheon\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-69094\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69094\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69094\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2019\/05\/jim-mccutcheon-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-69094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jim McCutcheon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Guitarist Jim McCutcheon, a Wright State University alumnus and music educator, won first place in the 2019 Ohio Federation of Music Clubs Adult Composer Contest.<\/p>\n<p>McCutcheon was honored for the third movement of a concerto he wrote titled \u201cMirkin Concerto for Classical Guitar and Strings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCutcheon said he worked on the piece on and off for about a year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe three judges&#8217; comments were delightful and informative, and they all really understood what I was doing with the work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>McCutcheon said the piece was inspired by David Mirkin, professor of pathology and pediatrics at the Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine and director of the Pathology and Clinical Laboratory at Dayton Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>McCutcheon said Mirkin, an ardent advocate of the arts and a lover of classical guitar music, had attended the premiere of a serenade McCutcheon had written for guitar and strings. After the performance, Mirkin told McCutcheon it would make a nice second movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018So you mean I need to write a first and a third movement to complete a concerto?\u2019\u201d McCutcheon asked. \u201cHe nodded, and I went straight to work on the third movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCutcheon is widely known as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2017\/02\/22\/first-string-2\/\">The Guitar Man<\/a>,\u201d a nickname he got from young students when he would go into the schools to share his love of the guitar and music.<\/p>\n<p>He earned his <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/music\">bachelor\u2019s degree in guitar performance<\/a> from Wright State in 1978. He then joined the faculty at Wright State as an adjunct faculty member teaching guitar and went on to earn a master\u2019s degree in music education at Wright State in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>McCutcheon is artist-in-residence at the University of Dayton and also adjunct faculty at Miami University. He has made four recordings for adults and two for children and written several publications of guitar compositions and instruction books.
