Anne Fife, who graduated in 2008 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in mass communications-TV broadcasting, produced the documentary film \u201cSecond Chances: One Year in Ohio\u2019s Drug Courts.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

A documentary film that provides a powerful, up-close look at how Ohio courts adjudicate defendants with drug addictions and steers them to the road to recovery was produced by Wright State University alumna Anne Fife.<\/p>\n

Fife, a 2008 graduate of Wright State, works for Ohio Government Telecommunications and produced \u201cSecond Chances: One Year in Ohio\u2019s Drug Courts<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The one-hour film, released in May, follows the drug use and adjudication of 19 Ohioans. It documents the complex struggle of drug addiction and how courts can play a crucial role in the recovery attempts of users, their families and communities.<\/p>\n

Fife grew up in Milwaukee and later moved to Columbus, Ohio.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing involved with television was a goal of mine since I was a child,\u201d said Fife. \u201cI used to make videos with my childhood neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fife said attending Wright State was a great choice for her because of its location, cost saving and beautiful campus. She graduated in 2008 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in mass communications-TV broadcasting<\/a> and a minor in business marketing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWright State was a wonderful place to learn about the business and grow a professional network to advance in this field,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Ohio Government Telecommunications is contracted by the Ohio Supreme Court to cover oral arguments before the court and produce videos to educate the judicial community and the public about the judicial system.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecond Chances\u201d was produced under contract to the Ohio Supreme Court\u2019s Office of Public Information and released through the office\u2019s Court News Ohio<\/a> website.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis film takes a very deep look into the human side of drug use, by the users and from the bench,\u201d said Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O\u2019Connor. \u201cThe film shows the thoughtful, caring, but firm work of drug courts as they deal on a personal level with the struggles of those trying to \u2018get clean.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cViewers learn about drug abuse directly from those who are living through it and from judges and court staffers who are invested in the outcomes, making this film unique,\u201d added Edward Miller, the public information director at the Supreme Court and executive director of the film.<\/p>\n

Fife and her crews made repeated trips to Medina County near Cleveland, north central Ohio\u2019s Marion County and Hocking County in southeast Ohio.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t know what we were going to encounter each time we met with participants in court or out of court, or when we went to court and heard from the judges,\u201d Fife said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing I took away from this process was not to give up on people,\u201d Fife said. \u201cThere are many times that people surprised us by making small changes that really affected their lives in a positive way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judges documented live from the bench and in interviews from their chambers included Judge Fred Moses of the Hocking County Municipal Court, Marion County Municipal Court Judge Teresa Lyn Ballinger and Medina County Common Pleas Court Judge Joyce Kimbler.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing that will stick with me is the realization that a person with addiction issues is more than just that label of addiction,\u201d Fife said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI met charismatic, funny, down-to-earth wonderful people,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were so much more than a point on a data summary and much more than an addict.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
