Filmmaker Steven Bognar is one of the newest members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. He graduated from Wright State’s motion pictures program in 1986.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cThe Academy\u201d sent a Dayton-area resident an email with a subject line he couldn\u2019t fathom when he first started making movies in the late \u201870s on a super 8 camera found in a Beavercreek ranch house.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe subject said \u201cWelcome to the Academy,\u201d Yellow Springs resident and Wright State filmmaker Steve Bognar (’86) said. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker is among the newest members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is like\u00a0\u2018wow, that really happened\u2019,\u201d Bognar said.\u00a0\u201cIn the Academy are so many of the filmmakers who are my heroes and sheroes whose work has meant so much to me over the years. To join their ranks is incredible. It just means so much to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He joins\u00a0Julia Reichert,\u00a0his partner in life and creative pursuits, in the Academy. She has been a member for about 9 years.<\/p>\n

Bognar said he fell in love with filmmaking during childhood days spent with friends making films with a super 8 camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe couldn\u2019t play guitar. We weren\u2019t musicians, so we made movies,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cI discovered a love.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, the Academy announced Bognar\u2019s name with 841 other new members from 59 countries.<\/p>\n

The class includes Oscar winners\u00a0Annie Lennox,\u00a0Lady Gaga\u00a0and\u00a0Adele.<\/p>\n

Like other members of his group, he will be charged with selecting nominees in the documentary category for the Oscar vote.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the responsibilities is that I will have to watch about 200 documentaries a year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He will be able to vote on nominees in the other Oscar categories, but not select nominees for those categories.<\/p>\n

“American Factory,” by Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, premiered at Sundance.<\/p><\/div>\n

Netflix plans to begin streaming Bognar and Reichert\u2019s \u201cAmerican Factory\u201d on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n

The film is about Fuyao Glass America. It follows the creation of the Chinese-owned automotive glass-factory in the same building that had once housed a General Motors assembly operation in Moraine.<\/p>\n

Reichert and Bognar received an Academy Award nomination in the \u201cBest Documentary (short subject)\u201d category for their 2009 HBO film \u201cThe Last Truck\u201d about the closing of that very same GM plant in Moraine.<\/p>\n

Documentary editor Lindsay Utz, who worked with Bognar and Reichert on \u201cAmerican Factory,\u201d was also added to the Academy.<\/p>\n

Bognar, whose resume includes the 2006 film \u201cLion in the House\u201d and the 1999 film \u201cPicture Day,\u201d is a former Wright State faculty member and a 1986 graduate of the Wright State Motion Pictures program.<\/p>\n

W. Stuart McDowell, the artistic director of Wright State\u2019s Department of Theatre, Dance, and Motion Pictures, has high praise for Bognar and his work for the\u00a0Tom Hanks Center for Motion Pictures.<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve’s the real thing. One of the finest documentarians working today,\u201d McDowell said. \u201c(Actor Tom) Hanks raved about Steve and Julia’s \u2018The Last Truck,\u2019 after that, Steve produced a half dozen promos for Wright State featuring Hanks, which played a major role in raising the $160 million as part of the Rise.Shine.Campaign. Steve played an unsung but major part in all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

A 1981 Carroll High School graduate, Bognar also taught movie production at\u00a0Colonel\u00a0White\u00a0and Yellow Springs high\u00a0schools.<\/p>\n
