{"id":71317,"date":"2019-07-25T11:09:48","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T15:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=71317"},"modified":"2019-07-25T13:45:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T17:45:11","slug":"wright-state-applied-research-corp-and-its-partners-awarded-750000-federal-economic-development-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/07\/25\/wright-state-applied-research-corp-and-its-partners-awarded-750000-federal-economic-development-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State Applied Research Corp. and its partners awarded $750,000 federal economic development grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_71325\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71325\" class=\"size-large wp-image-71325\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2019\/07\/51017_007-508x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-71325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(From left) John Owen and Paul Jackson (Photo by Chris Snyder)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Wright State Applied Research Corporation and its partners were awarded a $750,000 federal grant to spur economic development by moving medical technologies from the lab toward commercialization.<\/p>\n<p>The highly competitive Regional Innovation Strategies grants were announced July 23 by the U.S. Economic Development Administration, a bureau within the U.S. Department of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>The Dayton MedTech Nexus Initiative will move med-tech startups to market faster by leveraging the region\u2019s health-care specialization, defense research assets and entrepreneurial ecosystems to build new commercialization pathways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is great news for the region,\u201d WSARC CEO Dennis Andersh said. \u201cThe research labs and entrepreneurs in the Dayton region are creating world-class technologies with the potential to save lives across the globe. We\u2019re excited to work with EDA &amp; regional partners to get these products to market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Partners on the project with the Wright State Research Institute include Wright State\u2019s The ONEIL Center, The Entrepreneurs Center, BioOhio and the University of Dayton\u2019s Fastlane.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next three years, WSRI and its partners hope to create a network of 300 researchers, entrepreneurs, mentors and investors; create and assess a pipeline of 100 med-tech opportunities; support the development of 50 med-tech companies; place 50 interns in med-tech companies and see $10 million invested in startups.<\/p>\n<p>A total of $23 million in grants were awarded to 44 institutions of higher learning, nonprofits and entrepreneurship-focused organizations from 28 states and two territories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real good win for us,\u201d said Paul Jackson, the Wright State Research Institute\u2019s Director of Commercialization and Entrepreneurship. \u201cThere aren\u2019t a lot of dollars to take these concepts that work in the lab and turn them into real prototypes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright State joined the likes of Johns Hopkins University and Cornell University as recipients of the grants among the pool of 183 applicants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese projects will spark innovation across the country and will build on the beneficial environment the Trump Administration is creating for American businesses,\u201d said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.<\/p>\n<p>The grants are designed to help develop initiatives that advance new ideas and creative approaches to address rapidly evolving economic conditions. They support planning, technical assistant and\/or infrastructure construction.<\/p>\n<p>The grant to WSRI provides the institute and its five partners a total of $750,000 over three years.
