{"id":73775,"date":"2019-09-10T16:54:36","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T20:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=73775"},"modified":"2024-01-04T15:09:26","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T20:09:26","slug":"ddn-wright-state-research-corp-wins-49m-to-boost-air-force-business-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/09\/10\/ddn-wright-state-research-corp-wins-49m-to-boost-air-force-business-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Dayton Daily News: Wright State research corp. wins $49M to boost Air Force-business ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Excerpt<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_73783\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73783\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-73783\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-10-at-4.52.17-PM-260x204.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-73783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy Dayton Daily News<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright State\u2019s Applied Research Corp. is leading a $49 million effort to strengthen the Air Force\u2019s ties to business and universities while finding future problem-solvers.<\/p>\n<p>WSARC has been selected to lead a \u201cbold, first-of-its-kind\u201d U.S. Air Force Academic Partnership and Engagement Experiment \u2014 dubbed \u201cAPEX\u201d \u2014 program to boost Air Force partnerships with academia, the institution said in a release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big part of it is collaboration and education and connecting people together who don\u2019t normally get connected,\u201d Dennis Andersh, president and chief executive of WSARC, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>WSARC will be the lead agency assisting the Air Force in that process, Andersh said.<\/p>\n<p>The work \u201cwill be countrywide,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ll start in smaller regions to begin with. But eventually it will be across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to accelerate technology transfer from universities to industry and the Air Force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re looking for ingenuity, new technologies, but they\u2019re also looking for the workforce and the workforce employees,\u201d Andersh said. \u201cThis is a way of trying to attract new talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The five-year project will focus on \u201cenhancing academic engagement nationwide in support of the Air Force Small Business program, national defense strategy and the Air Force\u2019s 2030 strategy,\u201d a WSARC announcement said.<\/p>\n<p>Focusing initially on the Air Force\u2019s Small Business Innovative Research and Small Business Technology Transition Research programs, APEX is meant to \u201cimprove the connections between the Air Force, academia, and industry across the United States,\u201d the research corporation said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7690\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2011\/09\/newsroom_wsri-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"Wright State Research Institute Logo\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/>\u201cImportantly, the APEX project focuses specifically on growing the Air Force\u2019s technological defense capabilities in partnership with academia,\u201d said Bill Harrison the Air Force Research Laboratory small business director. AFRL is based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.<\/p>\n<p>The corporation and other partners around the country will receive the money. The money will seed teams to work together on various projects.<\/p>\n<p>The work won\u2019t be entirely new, Andersh said. \u201cWe\u2019re building off what we\u2019ve been doing in Ohio for the past five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio Federal Research Network has been funded by state government in that time.
