{"id":76566,"date":"2019-10-28T07:00:51","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T11:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=76566"},"modified":"2019-10-28T07:01:57","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T11:01:57","slug":"susan-edwards-named-next-president-of-wright-state-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/10\/28\/susan-edwards-named-next-president-of-wright-state-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Susan Edwards named next president of Wright State University"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_76007\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/20124_002-sue-edwards1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76007\" class=\"wp-image-76007\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2019\/10\/20124_002-Sue-Edwards1-257x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-76007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susan Edwards, who joined Wright State in 2018 as provost, will become the university\u2019s eighth president on Jan. 1.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Provost Susan Edwards was named Wright State University\u2019s next president by the university\u2019s Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards will assume the role Jan. 1 and will serve as the university\u2019s eighth president.<\/p>\n<p>In a unanimous vote, the trustees on Oct. 26 selected Edwards to succeed President Cheryl B. Schrader, <a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/10\/15\/cheryl-b-schrader-to-retire-as-president-of-wright-state-university\/\">who plans to retire Dec. 31<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter carefully considering the best options for the university and after discussing the matter with employee and student leaders, we believe Dr. Edwards is the right person to take the university forward,\u201d said Sean Fitzpatrick, chair of the Board of Trustees. \u201cWe are confident Dr. Edwards will keep the university focused on providing an excellent education for our students and position Wright State to better serve the economic needs of the region, particularly in the high demand areas of health care, technology and business, as well as supporting the employment, educational and research needs of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edwards said she is proud of Wright State, how it serves students and the region and is honored and humbled to serve the university and its partners as Wright State\u2019s eighth president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have so much going for us. We are committed to providing a high quality, high outcome education,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve enjoyed my opportunity to engage with faculty, staff and students and continue conversations this semester so that we may work together to move the university forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edwards, <a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2018\/05\/10\/susan-edwards-of-appalachian-state-named-provost-of-wright-state-university\/\">who was named provost in May 2018<\/a>, said that the university must continue to focus on enrollment, retention and bolstering university partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudent success is the umbrella; retention, experiential learning and high quality classroom education are the three things that fall underneath it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards is committed to fostering a welcome and inclusive campus for students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have made a concerted effort to recruit a more diverse student body. This year\u2019s incoming freshman class is the most diverse in Wright State\u2019s history,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I wish that to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As president, Edwards is looking forward to improving relations with the community and being very vocal about telling the Wright State story.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to coming to Wright State, Edwards served as vice provost for faculty affairs and professor of biology at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. She was responsible for overseeing all areas of faculty evaluation and development and served as the academic affairs liaison on all personnel matters.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Edwards left her native Australia to join the Department of Biology at Appalachian State. She then took on a leadership role as assistant chair for three years before being appointed chair of the department in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, she was the Australian equivalent of an associate professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences at James Cook University in Australia. She also served as a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Biology at Georgia Southern University.<\/p>\n<p>To date, Edwards has developed and taught over 21 courses in 10 different degree programs ranging from general biology to medicine.
