David Hopkins,  Wright State University president, says it is ingrained in his school\u2019s  history, with 9,000 WSU students participating in 930,000 hours of  community service during the last school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt  has been the very essence of Wright State from the beginning because we  came from a grassroots movement to have a four-year public university  that would be committed to engaging in the community,\u201d Hopkins said. \u201cWe  really encourage students to give back to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior  Molly Early, who studies early childhood education, was one of the  thousands of Wright State volunteers who devoted time to a local  community group last year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/news\/dayton-news\/area-college-students-spend-nearly-1area-college-students-spend-nearly-1m-hours-volunteering-1256696.html\">DaytonDailyNews.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>((Excerpt)) Local universities all have seen community service rates among students and faculty on the rise.
