{"id":78601,"date":"2019-11-27T13:01:12","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T18:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=78601"},"modified":"2024-01-04T14:50:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T19:50:27","slug":"ddn-wright-state-alums-daytonians-play-big-role-in-acclaimed-film-getting-oscar-buzz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/11\/27\/ddn-wright-state-alums-daytonians-play-big-role-in-acclaimed-film-getting-oscar-buzz\/","title":{"rendered":"Dayton Daily News: Wright State alums, Daytonians play big role in acclaimed film getting Oscar buzz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Excerpt<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-78609\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-27-at-12.58.15-PM-508x332.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the most critically films of the year is crawling with Raiders.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan McNeal, the manager of The Neon movie theater downtown, said\u00a0 numerous Daytonians and Wright State University alumni played a part in \u201cDark Waters,\u201d a film starring\u00a0Mark Ruffalo,\u00a0Anne Hathaway,\u00a0Tim Robbins\u00a0and\u00a0William Jackson Harper\u00a0filmed partly in Cincinnati.<\/p>\n<p>Stand-outs include\u00a0Bruce Cromer, a Wright State acting professor who plays an attorney in \u201cDark Waters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was his very first film,\u201d McNeal said of the veteran of stage productions.\u00a0\u201cIt is not just a couple of lines. It is a \u2018part\u2019 in the film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p\">Wright State graduate Hannah Beachler, an Oscar winner for her work on \u201cBlack Panther,\u201d was the film\u2019s production designer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p\">Beachler learned of her Oscar nomination during the filming of Black Waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p\">Dayton resident\u00a0Karri O&#8217;Reilly was the film\u2019s production supervisor for the warm weather unit.<\/p>\n<p>According to O\u2019Reilly and McNeal others from the Dayton area or the program now called the\u00a0Tom Hanks Center for Motion Pictures at Wright State University included\u00a0Chance Madison,\u00a0Mike Dittiacur,\u00a0\u00a0Casey Shelton,\u00a0Laura Dennings,\u00a0Scott Lipez,\u00a0Scott Bowers,\u00a0Denise Dal Vera,\u00a0Selena Burks-Rentschler,\u00a0\u00a0Ryan Tudor,\u00a0Russ Faust,\u00a0Kasey Hosp,\u00a0Leah Byrd\u00a0and\u00a0Sara Mackie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p\">McNeal was an extra in the movie. He believes others from the Dayton area were involved as extras as well.<\/p>\n<p>The Focus Features film directed by Todd Haynes is set to open at the Neon, 130 E. Fifth St, on Thursday, Dec. 5.\u00a0There will be a special screening at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDark Waters\u201d tells the story of\u00a0corporate environmental defense attorney Rob Bilott who risks his career and family to \u201cuncover a dark secret hidden by one of the world\u2019s largest corporations and to bring justice to a community dangerously exposed for decades to deadly chemicals,\u201d the description says.<\/p>\n<p>McNeal says the praise the film has received is deserved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, I love Todd Haynes. I love his aesthetic. His storytelling,\u201d McNeal said.\u00a0\u201cIt is also a film about corporations and their lack of concern about humanity and more (concern for) the bottom line.
