{"id":81483,"date":"2020-01-31T15:03:25","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T20:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=81483"},"modified":"2022-09-29T11:38:06","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T15:38:06","slug":"steven-bognar-and-julia-reichert-win-directors-guild-of-america-award-for-american-factory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2020\/01\/31\/steven-bognar-and-julia-reichert-win-directors-guild-of-america-award-for-american-factory\/","title":{"rendered":"Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert win Directors Guild of America Award for &#8216;American Factory&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_81475\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/reichert-bognar-directors-guild-award-300x300-press-photo\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81475\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81475\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2020\/01\/Reichert-Bognar-Directors-Guild-award-300x300-press-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-81475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar won the award for top documentary film at the Directors Guild Of America Awards in Los Angeles on Jan. 25.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The national spotlight was shining brightly on Wright State University professor emeritus Julia Reichert and former motion pictures faculty member Steven Bognar as they won the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for \u201cAmerican Factory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Their documentary film is a look at Fuyao Glass America, a Chinese company that took over the site of the Moraine General Motors\u2019 truck plant, which closed in 2008 and put more than 1,000 workers out of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement Awards for 2019 were announced Jan. 25 during the 72nd Annual DGA Awards at the Ritz Carlton in Downtown Los Angeles. This was the first DGA nomination for Bognar and Reichert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a homegrown movie made by a homegrown team,\u201d Bognar told the audience at the Dayton premiere of \u201cAmerican Factory\u201d at the Victoria Theater on Aug. 19. He added that the movie\u2019s credits are thick with the names of people with Wright State connections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Factory\u201d also received the Best Directing Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It was chosen by Barack and Michelle Obama as the first release by their new company, Higher Ground Productions, and is available on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Factory\u201d also has been <a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2020\/01\/13\/latest-documentary-by-wright-state-filmmakers-julia-reichert-and-steven-bognar-wins-oscar-nomination\/\">nominated for an Academy Award<\/a> in the Documentary (Feature) category by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Oscars will be broadcast live on Feb. 9. The Oscar nomination is the fourth for Reichert and the second for Bognar.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Deer, professor and chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/theatre-dance-and-motion-pictures\">Wright State Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures<\/a>, said Reichert and Bognar have been integral to the life of the department and the university community for more than 30 years. \u201cThey bring a level of integrity to their teaching, mentorship and documentary film work that is genuinely world-class,\u201d said Deer. \u201cThough their professional lives have taken them out of our classrooms, they are still powerfully part of this department and continue influencing our young filmmakers to create stories that matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bognar also gave special thanks at the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/08\/21\/american-factory\/\">American Factory\u201d Dayton premiere<\/a> to the Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures, saying it has spawned \u201cmany talented young filmmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/american-factory-3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-81471\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2020\/01\/American-Factory-1-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Reichert and Bognar documented the final days of the same plant before it was shuttered in their 2010 HBO film \u201cThe Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant.\u201d It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary (short subject).<\/p>\n<p>For 28 years, Reichert was a professor of film production at Wright State. She has mentored filmmakers from around the country and is co-founder of Indie Caucus, the action group working to keep the documentary form alive and well on PBS. Reichert also has won Academy Award nominations for \u201cUnion Maids\u201d (1977), \u201cSeeing Red\u201d (1984) and \u201cThe Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant\u201d (2010).<\/p>\n<p>Reichert and Bognar\u2019s film \u201cA Lion in the House\u201d was a four-hour, two-part primetime PBS special and won the Primetime Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking as well as the Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Film and Digital Media.<\/p>\n<p>Bognar also is a former Wright State faculty member and a 1986 graduate of the <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/theatre-dance-and-motion-pictures\/bachelor-of-arts-or-bachelor-of-fine-arts-in-motion-pictures\">Wright State Motion Pictures program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both Bognar and Reichert are members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
