{"id":88462,"date":"2020-05-12T14:48:35","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T18:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=88462"},"modified":"2020-05-12T14:48:36","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T18:48:36","slug":"game-changer-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2020\/05\/12\/game-changer-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Game changer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2020\/05\/12\/game-changer-2\/discord_news_banner-01\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-88474\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-88474\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2020\/05\/discord_news_banner-01-508x339.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a>A communication channel popular with video gamers is being used to connect hundreds of Wright State University computer science and engineering students and faculty during coronavirus-imposed remote learning.<\/p>\n<p>For several years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/computer-science-and-engineering\">Department of Computer Science and Engineering<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/\">College of Engineering and Computer Science<\/a> has offered online learning that enables students to talk to their professors during classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe noticed what we call \u2018hallway discussions\u2019 \u2014 before class, after class, students communicating with other students,\u201d said Matt Kijowski, cyber systems program manager. \u201cWe needed something that was primarily student-driven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity presented itself in mid-March when all in-person classes at Wright State were moved to remote delivery through the end of the spring semester and later most classes through summer semester to try to limit the spread of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/coronavirus\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many faculty and staff embraced the opportunity to interact with students online. Kijowski and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering decided to try using Discord in addition to the conventional online classes.<\/p>\n<p>Discord is a free computer software and digital distribution platform designed for video gaming communities. It specializes in text, image, video and audio communication between users in a chat channel. It was instantly popular with the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt blew up overnight,\u201d said Kijowski. \u201cStudents really wanted the ability to communicate with one another if they had frustrations, if they had fears. They just wanted to chat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kijowski and his team began to beef up the Discord channel, adding a welcome window, tech support and channels for students to chat individually with faculty and teaching assistants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sitting here right now on Discord and we have three system administrators, two advisers, three faculty members, two staffers, eight teaching assistants and 143 students who are live right now,\u201d said Kijowski. &#8220;And we\u2019ve got 469 offline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The service is basically available around the clock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not really just 9 to 5,\u201d said Kijowski. \u201cThese are really weird times, and I\u2019m online all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kijowski and his team try to poll the students every day to keep them engaged and find out, for example, what projects they might be interested in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is some of the best feedback communication polls that we\u2019ve had in years,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is now a Class Selection channel where you can go in and select which classes you are interested in. A voice and text channel specifically for those classes pops up. Some of them are used all of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ian M. Mahaffy, a senior computer science student from Dayton, said he uses Discord to connect with fellow students on everything from classwork to conversations unrelated to class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish it hadn&#8217;t taken a pandemic for this to take off, as having a service like Discord is incredibly useful for students regardless of the distance learning we are currently working in,\u201d said Mahaffy. \u201cI would like to see this stay around in some capacity, even after things go back to normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kijowski, who has helped the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/electrical-engineering\">Department of Electrical Engineering<\/a> start using Discord, attributes its popularity to the fact that many students are video gamers and were already on the platform. In addition, he said, the users\u2019 identities have all been verified so students are confident about with whom they are communicating.<\/p>\n<p>There are questions and comments about programming quizzes, video conferencing, screen sharing, zip files and singularity containers.
