{"id":89995,"date":"2020-06-01T16:54:16","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T20:54:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=89995"},"modified":"2020-06-01T16:54:16","modified_gmt":"2020-06-01T20:54:16","slug":"unity-rock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2020\/06\/01\/unity-rock\/","title":{"rendered":"Unity rock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Labib Rouhana, associate professor of biological sciences at Wright State University, wanted to acknowledge the suffering that African American students and co-workers have been living with and to inform the campus community that &#8220;we\u2019re not looking away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rouhana decided he was going to get his message out by painting the Wright State Rock, which promotes school spirit and pride, a particular cause or an event on campus.<\/p>\n<p>After painting over old artwork with black paint, Rouhana invited Arthur Miller, a 2018 alumnus, to help with the messaging. Miller happened to be driving by with his 5-year-old son, Enzo, showing him where he went to college and asked if they could help.<\/p>\n<p>After three hours of work on May 31, they painted the word &#8220;UNITY&#8221; between an American flag and a broken heart. \u201cHe actually came up with the message,\u201d said Rouhana of Miller\u2019s artwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not about separation, it\u2019s about unity. It is about seeing the content of ones character rather than their skin color,\u201d said Miller.<\/p>\n<p>Rock etiquette dictates that the artwork must remain on the rock for at least 24 hours.
