{"id":94654,"date":"2020-10-15T08:22:18","date_gmt":"2020-10-15T12:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=94654"},"modified":"2020-10-15T09:22:34","modified_gmt":"2020-10-15T13:22:34","slug":"elite-research-internship-program-finishes-a-distant-win-in-the-summer-of-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2020\/10\/15\/elite-research-internship-program-finishes-a-distant-win-in-the-summer-of-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Elite research internship program finishes a \u2018distant win\u2019 in the summer of 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2019\/06\/21\/wright-state-university-board-of-trustees-approves-2019-20-budget-on-an-interim-basis\/wright-state-logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-69862\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-69862\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2019\/06\/wright-state-logo-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a>Wright State University, in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), annually hosts the Autonomy Technology Research Center (ATRC) Summer Internship Program.<\/p>\n<p>This year the more than 90 interns and affiliates, along with more than 30 AFRL mentors and advisers were virtually connected through an array of collaborative tools and shared access to challenging data collections and high-performance computing assets.<\/p>\n<p>ATRC attracts student researchers from more than 40 universities every summer to create advanced solutions for complex sensing and autonomous technologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ATRC consists of a large pool of talented students that are interested in DoD research,\u201d said Theresa Scarnati, a research mathematician with the AFRL Sensors Directorate and former ATRC intern. \u201cThey get the opportunity to learn about Air Force-relevant problems and grow into potential future Air Force employees. In addition, many of the projects that the students work on are often seedlings for future, larger AFRL efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ed Zelnio, an AFRL Sensors Directorate researcher, directs the ATR Center to support cutting-edge mentor-driven research addressing defense challenges for the nation and encouraging the brightest STEM students in their work while exposing them to the benefits and opportunities of a career with the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program has proven to be key in preparing and recruiting new junior force members from the best students in the country,\u201d said Fred Garber, professor of electrical engineering at Wright State and an ATRC Summer Internship Program coordinator. \u201cThe professional and personal connections formed between interns, mentors and AFRL leaders will impact future leadership for a generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its 12-year history, the program has helped train hundreds of the nation\u2019s brightest researchers and has seen scores of its alumni placed in the Defense Department and supporting institutions.
