The Black Student Union hosted a Black Voices Matter Rally followed by a candlelight vigil on Oct. 8 on the North Lawn.<\/p>\n
The rally featured speakers, poets, musical performances, special guests and information about racial injustice and voting in the Nov. 3 election. A candlelight vigil recognizing 50 victims of police violence followed the rally.<\/p>\n
The Black Student Union planned a peaceful event with dozens of Wright State students in attendance. Participants were required to wear masks and follow physical distancing guidelines.<\/p>\n
Dorian Buford, president of the Black Student Union, credited Sydney Wyatt, the student organization’s treasurer, for first suggesting the idea of organizing a candlelight vigil over the summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe decided that we wanted to do something to make a difference,\u201d said Wyatt.<\/p>\n
The Black Student Union at Wright State provides students with social, cultural, and political awareness and consciousness for the upliftment of the African American community on campus.<\/p>\n
