We start 2013 with a nod and wink to the best of 2012 and look forward to more great things to come in the New Year. At Wright State University, we’re always excited about our students and their accomplishments. The following are the top five student-themed videos (with one honorable mention) from Wright State’s YouTube channel, (www.wright.edu/youtube).

Honorable mention: Student on the Scene—Move-In Day 2012

Upload Date: August 23, 2012

In 2012 we launched our newest video series, Student on the Scene. Communications and Marketing student employee Reilly Dixon reports on the interesting happenings on Wright State’s Dayton campus and shares his adventures with a flair that is truly his own. The maiden voyage was such a hit we just had to include it as an honorable mention to this esteemed list.

Fifth Place: Follow the Phantom: Auditions

Upload Date: April 11, 2012

With unique access and help from Wright State’s theatre department, we followed the actor training to play the Phantom in Wright State’s production of the famed musical, Phantom of the Opera. From auditions to opening night, our camera was there. Fifteen sell-out performances showed just how excited the Wright State and Dayton communities were to watch Wright State students take the stage in this Andrew Lloyd Webber classic at the Festival Playhouse. The production also featured the largest audition turnout ever for a Wright State production.

Fourth Place: World Choir Games Preparation

Upload Date: May 30, 2012

The World Choir Games are known across the globe as the choral equivalent to the Olympics. In 2012 for the first time, the games were held in the United States. Thirty-two Wright State students were excited for the opportunity to compete at their highest level. In the end, the Wright State University Collegiate Chorale was recognized for consistent excellence with a pair of silver medals.

Third Place: Wright State Orientation 2012

Upload Date: April 17, 2012

Each year, Wright State is privileged to welcome a fresh batch of incoming students who are both new to Wright State and new to living away from home. To prepare students for the transition, Wright State’s mascot Rowdy Raider teamed up with our video crew to help students know what to expect. Rowdy is always a lot of fun to work with, providing laughs and antics that keep everybody on their toes.

Second Place: RENT–Wright State Theatre

Upload Date: January 18, 2012

Wright State’s theatre department had a big year in 2012 with two of the top five Wright State YouTube channel videos for 2012 focusing on theatre productions. Performing the controversial production of RENT, students had the opportunity to work on a show that spent 12 years on Broadway before becoming a feature film in 2005. “It’s probably our students’ favorite musical ever,” said Stuart McDowell, department chair and the show’s producer.

First Place: Service-Dog Training Program

Upload Date: April 27, 2012

Wright State was proud and excited to welcome 4 Paws for Ability to campus during the fall quarter of 2011. In a pilot program on Wright State’s Dayton campus, three puppies were placed with three students to foster. The student commitment required typical home care for the animals but also included taking the puppies on all day-to-day activities like class, errands or even the mall. Introducing puppies to tasks like pushing the buttons to call the elevator or the buttons to open handicap accessible doors was an important part of socializing the dogs for their future owners. Because of Wright State’s commitment to accessibility, the university is uniquely positioned to help these puppies succeed and looks forward to a continued connection with 4 Paws for Ability.
