Ohio 3rd in nation in loss of young people

Ohio is getting older.

While the state’s population grew slightly during the last decade, its under-18 population dropped by 157,588, or 5.5 percent, according to the 2010 Census.

That was the third-largest loss of young people in the nation — behind only New York and Michigan.

Texas, meanwhile, gained almost 1 million young people to lead the nation.

“People are moving to where jobs are, said Jane Dockery, associate director of the Center for Urban and Public Affairs at Wright State University. “They’re not so much in Ohio anymore.”
