Gary LeRoy, M.D., associate dean for student affairs and admissions and associate professor of family medicine at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, was recently appointed to serve on the Primary Care Medical Student Scholarship Selection Committee, funded through the Ohio Board of Regents’ Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program.
LeRoy was one of seven physicians appointed to serve on the committee. Four of the physicians, including LeRoy, are members of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians.
The scholarship opportunity is a critical step for the state of Ohio to address the need for more primary care physicians through the development and support of enhanced medical education that is focused on the patient-centered medical home model of care.
The newly formed committee will be charged with selecting students from a talented applicant pool that will help fill the primary care needs of the state and ultimately transform the model of care for Ohioans. LeRoy and others on the committee will help ensure that state’s top medical talent is given an opportunity to stay, learn and earn their degree in primary care in Ohio.
The Primary Care Medical Student Scholarship will direct workforce focus to the alarming need for primary physicians in Ohio’s urban and rural areas. The Ohio Board of Regents is taking strategic and sustained action to increase the number of medical students who pursue a path in primary care.
