Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine students to host blood drive on Feb. 11

Medical students of the Phi Rho Sigma Medical Society at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine will host a blood drive for the Community Blood Center on Tuesday, Feb. 11, noon to 4 p.m., in the White Hall atrium on Wright State’s campus.

Phi Rho Sigma is a national social and community service organization. The Boonshoft School of Medicine chapter has hosted blood drives since 2007. In 2013, the Community Blood Center recognized the chapter for its blood drive results by naming it a Sliver Partner in the Life Saving Ambassadors Club.

“We strive to uphold the ideals of our future medical profession by serving our community,” said Lauren Welch, event organizer and second-year medical student. “By organizing events such as the blood drive, we are able to contribute to the life-saving endeavors of our neighbors at the Community Blood Center while also educating ourselves and our colleagues about the importance of blood donation.”

Appointments are encouraged and can be scheduled at www.donortime.com; enter the sponsor code 228. At registration, all potential donors will need to present a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or school ID that shows the donor’s full name.

Blood donors must be 17 or older, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. They should not have any cold or flu symptoms.

Most medications that are taken for maintenance, including blood pressure, thyroid, cholesterol, allergies, hormones and diabetes, are acceptable. Those who have any questions about their eligibility to donate should e-mail canidonate@cbccts.org.

Blood donors should plan to spend 45 minutes to one hour completing the entire donation process. All registered donors will receive a “Blood Donor – Every Drop Counts” speckled campfire mug from the Community Blood Center.
