Supporting the whole child focus of annual Learn Local Conference at Wright State

The Learn Local Conference will feature workshops on a wide variety of topics geared toward improving educator effectiveness with a focus on supporting the whole child.

Wright State University’s College of Health, Education and Human Services will hold its 11th annual Learn Local Conference for regional educators on Saturday, March 4, beginning at 7:45 a.m. in Allyn Hall.

The free conference offers educators, administrators and teacher candidates the unique opportunity to celebrate as well as network and learn from others making a positive impact in their communities through service and education.

This year’s Learn Local Conference will feature workshops on a wide variety of topics geared toward improving educator effectiveness with a focus on supporting the whole child.

The College of Health, Education and Human Services offers the conference to emphasize the value of education and appreciation for educators and has nine P–12 partner districts that encourage participation and continue to provide many presenters and attendees for the conference. In the past, the conference has attracted nearly 300 educators from over 20 school districts.

“We seek to make this conference a positive and enjoyable experience for all who attend,” said Amy Elston, lecturer and assistant director of the Office of Partnerships and Field Experiences. “We celebrate learning from one another and embracing the expertise found right here in our local area. We want every attendee to leave Wright State feeling appreciated and motivated to try new things with their learners.”

The conference will kick off with a presentation on “Student Success: A Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Approach” by Kevin Lorson, Ph.D., professor and director of the Health and Physical Education Licensure Program at Wright State. Lorson will discuss how student success and health are inextricably linked and key to students realizing their fullest potential.
