Dayton Business Journal: Former Wright State educator funds medical scholarships through $1.5M estate donation

A former Wright State University educator and pathology pioneer will fund scholarships for the university’s medical students through a posthumous donation from her estate.

Dr. Mary Marshall Sidorsky has left a $1.5 million gift through her estate to the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

The Mary L. Marshall, M.D., Scholarship will be awarded to Wright State medical students in good academic standing who are disadvantaged or have need, as determined by the school’s office of financial aid or admissions.

“Dr. Sidorsky’s estate gift will fund this scholarship for generations of medical students to come,” said Sue Edwards, president of Wright State. “Her life and career will serve as an inspiration to our students. Dr. Sidorsky’s generosity will allow us to continue graduating highly trained medical professionals who will serve countless patients throughout our region, state and nation.”

Sidorsky was the second woman to complete a residency in pathology at the University of Michigan.

She taught as associate clinical professor of pathology and as a volunteer faculty member during Wright State’s medical school’s early years, focusing on the gastrointestinal tract to medical students. She taught from 1975 until 1990.

She also was an associate pathologist at Miami Valley Hospital from 1969 until 1990, when she retired from the practice of anatomic and clinical pathology.

She and her late husband, Abraham Sidorsky, spent their retirement in San Antonio, where they enjoyed their mutual interests in ballroom dancing and gardening.

The Boonshoft School of Medicine recently received another multimillion-dollar posthumous gift designated for student support. In 2024, Dr. William Bernie, a local doctor and founding member of the school, bequeathed $1.7 million from his estate to fund medical student scholarships.
