Quotes on local crime stats taken out of context

((excerpt))

Re “Burglaries rise across region,” Jan. 15: When I agreed to be interviewed by Staff Writer Cornelius Frolik, he did not tell me that I would be quoted out of context and then set against my colleague at the University of Dayton and local law enforcement.

I did say that having more unemployed people at home would deter burglars, but the context was the Great Depression, when 25 percent of able workers could watch over what few valuables they had and ensure that their children were not committing delinquent acts.

Moreover, the Dayton Daily News headline is misleading because four of the areas in the graphic showed a decrease in burglaries, while the increase for Kettering was insignificant.
