Two Dayton-area universities will receive more than $700,000 this year from a state-sponsored funding pool designed to advance collaborative research in several areas.
Wright State University and the University of Dayton were among nine universities and one hospital that will each receive part of a nearly $5.7 million funding allocation from the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) in 2020. Recipients may use the funds to support research on addiction, infant mortality and cybersecurity.
Wright State was awarded $443,000 for addiction research. The university will use those funds to recruit and train 150 primary care providers in a prescription-tapering protocol called PRESTO (Promoting Engagement for Safe Tapering of Opioids). The resulting study will compare prescribing patterns eight months before and after training to determine whether the PRESTO protocol is an effective way to reduce the risk of overdose.
