Artist shows how he sees what he hears

Student illustrates his gift of synesthesia.

It’s difficult to know how many people worldwide are synesthetes, but research suggests that it’s about one in 2,000 people, according to the American Psychological Association.

Powers, a senior at Wright State University, is showing a solo exhibition of his artwork at the Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery through July 24.

“It’s not abstract, expressive or nonrepresentational art,” Powers said. “It’s as close as I can get to a visual representation of things that I actually see when I actually hear.”
