Wright State Physicians doctor: options are available for infertility

One in eight U.S. couples of childbearing age has trouble conceiving or sustaining a pregnancy, according to the National Infertility Association. As part of National Infertility Awareness Week, April 19-25, Steven R. Lindheim, M.D., a reproductive endocrinologist with Wright State Physicians Obstetrics and Gynecology, is working to raise awareness about infertility and the options to treat it.

“Infertility is more common than some people realize,” said Lindheim, who also is a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine. “Many infertility cases can be treated with medicine or surgery.”

Lindheim has more than 20 years experience and is known nationally and internationally for his expertise in infertility, oncofertility, cryopreservation, in vitro fertilization, third-party reproduction, bioethics and minimally invasive surgery. He explained that infertility treatment depends on the individual and the factors that contribute to the condition. Advanced age, lack of exercise and excessive alcohol use can increase the chances of infertility.

At Wright State Physicians Obstetrics and Gynecology, Lindheim has performed successful in vitro fertilization pregnancies and has worked with patients on preimplantation genetic diagnosis and screening of embryos to ensure that there are no genetic defects within embryos created through in vitro fertilization.

In addition, he is leading the practice in performing sperm and egg freezing for cancer patients. Under his leadership, the practice has implemented a shared risk program to help patients afford in vitro fertilization.
