Hundreds of Wright State University students received a free coat or sweater during the second Winter Coat Giveaway hosted by the Student Government Association.
The giveaway was held in the Cultural and Identity Center event space in the Student Union. The event was scheduled to last 90 minutes but because of the large turnout forced the event organizers to begin early and the last winter items were selected in 45 minutes.
“It’s really helping people,” said Aakriti Aakriti, a first-year international student majoring in biological sciences.
Aakriti said her inability to apply for scholarships and the monetary exchange rate for her family in India make it difficult to afford a new winter coat when the temperatures drop outside.
“I’ve never seen snow before so it’s been fun,” said Aakriti.
An organization called Compassion First in Vandalia donated most of the items that were distributed. Hannah Davidson, a physiology and neuroscience major who is involved with the Student Government Association and whose family volunteers for Compassion First, said she was happy to help her classmates stay warm.
“It’s really exciting to provide resources so they are better equipped for the wintertime,” said Davidson.
Davidson hopes the giveaways will continue for years to come.
