Profitable pitch

Wright State grad used Wright Venture competition to kickstart successful roofing business

When Peyton Hoff graduated from Wright State University with a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship in 2023, he had more than just a diploma in hand.

About a month before graduation, he won Wright Venture, the annual competition hosted by the Raj Soin College of Business, taking home $6,000 in prize money.

Hoff used those funds to launch Absolute Roofing Services, dedicating most of the money to advertising and marketing efforts.

Two years later, his business is thriving, and he has set a goal to double his revenue each year. He also plans to hire additional sales representatives in the near future and expand into more commercial construction projects.

The company has already grown beyond its original scope. Hoff has expanded his services to include siding, gutters and full exterior remodel services and recently added a drone to his toolbox to help with difficult roof inspections.

“I like taking something that needs some work and making it something beautiful,” he said.

Hoff credits the Wright Venture competition for motivating him to create a business plan and launch his company. He continues to draw on lessons from his Wright State business classes and insights gained through the university’s Entrepreneur Club.

“I think it’s great that it worked for Peyton so well,” said Kendall Goodrich, Ph.D., professor of marketing and chair of the School of Supply Chain, Marketing and Management in the Raj Soin College of Business. “One of the main ideas of Wright Venture is to take ideas from students and grow them to have a successful launch.”
